(00:00:00.051): Have you been feeling like life and God has gone totally off script lately? (00:00:04.953): All the plans that you made, the progress that you achieved has just gone up in smoke. (00:00:09.634): I want to encourage you today that going off script is just what God does (00:00:15.036): and you are right where you need to be. (00:00:18.198): Hello, Fearless One. (00:00:19.438): This is Nerissa Golden and I'm really glad you've joined me today for episode 19. (00:00:25.542): Dropping this one a couple days late, but guess why? (00:00:28.223): Because life has been literally off script over the past few days and so far removed (00:00:34.066): from what I expected on my 2026 bingo card. (00:00:37.388): But it prompted this week's episode and so I wanted to share that word with you. (00:00:42.610): The first story that comes to mind is from 2 Kings chapter 5. (00:00:47.053): Naaman is a commander in the Syrian army. (00:00:50.227): But he was also a leper. (00:00:52.189): A young Israeli girl had been captured and brought to his house to work (00:00:55.832): with his wife and she tells the wife, (00:00:58.594): I wish your husband were in Israel because then he could be healed. (00:01:03.458): Naaman hears this and he gets the blessing of his king to travel to Israel (00:01:08.283): to be cleansed of leprosy. (00:01:10.597): He goes to the king of Israel with a letter from his king and says he's come to be healed. (00:01:16.543): Of course, the king of Israel is distraught and wonders if the Syrian king is trying (00:01:21.127): to start a war. (00:01:22.488): But Elisha the prophet hears about what the king has done and says, (00:01:27.113): send the man to me so he will know there is a God in Israel. (00:01:31.414): No, Elisha doesn't even meet with him personally. (00:01:35.217): He sends a messenger to tell Naaman to go and wash in the Jordan River seven times (00:01:41.342): and your flesh will be restored. (00:01:43.485): Naaman is upset because first off, Elisha doesn't come in person. (00:01:48.248): He sends a messenger. (00:01:49.829): Then he tells him to go and bathe in the dirty Jordan River. (00:01:54.571): He said, Indeed I said to myself he will surely come out to me and stand and call (00:02:01.374): on the name of Lord his God and wave His hand over the place and heal the leprosy. (00:02:07.022): We do that don't We get a picture in our minds of how God is going to move (00:02:12.029): in our lives. (00:02:13.109): And so we are looking for that to happen and we get frustrated (00:02:16.851): and we often lose faith because we expected this one outcome in a particular way. (00:02:22.234): God has promised to heal us, but he doesn't promise that it will be like a magic wand waving. (00:02:28.378): It may mean surgery or therapy or changing our diet. (00:02:33.160): He often works in ways we do not see or don't want to see (00:02:37.303): because sometimes it takes effort on our part to get and maintain the result. (00:02:41.966): Naaman was eventually convinced by his servants to listen to the prophet (00:02:46.689): and he washed in the dirty river and the Bible says his flesh became like (00:02:51.512): that of a newborn baby. (00:02:53.792): The goal is always obedience. (00:02:56.676): We have to unlink the way we think God will do things from the fact (00:03:00.762): that he will move and act in his way and in his time. (00:03:05.678): Your God loves to go off script. (00:03:08.320): It is also important that he does this because this is how you will see your own growth. (00:03:13.925): If life happened the same way every time, (00:03:16.927): then you wouldn't be able to judge your own development. (00:03:19.929): You wouldn't see that once you were over there and now you are here. (00:03:24.373): Moses missed his chance at entering the promised land because he forgot he was also (00:03:29.877): on his own journey. (00:03:31.398): He seemed to have forgotten where he'd started and that he used to have (00:03:35.280): an anger problem which led to murder and that he hadn't yet arrived at the end (00:03:40.062): of his growth. (00:03:41.262): Let me remind you of his story. (00:03:43.423): Moses was a Hebrew who grew up in the Egyptian palace. (00:03:47.465): While his countrymen and women were enslaved, he was being raised as a prince. (00:03:52.708): He kills an Egyptian who he saw abusing a slave and he runs away to hide. (00:03:58.386): Forty years later, God calls him and says, (00:04:01.707): I want you to go to Pharaoh and tell him to let my people go. (00:04:05.928): Now the Pharaoh was most likely the man who he would have known as his grandfather. (00:04:10.748): And Moses was nervous about returning home. (00:04:13.789): God gives him a rod, a wooden stick that he could use to perform magic tricks. (00:04:18.570): The rod turned into a snake and ate up the other snakes. (00:04:22.391): It was later used to part the Red Sea so the children of Israel could cross over on dry land. (00:04:28.530): It was used to help them win wars as he held the rod high. (00:04:32.430): That rod was also thrown into the waters at one point to turn the bitter water sweet (00:04:38.512): so the children could have clean water to drink. (00:04:41.594): The rod was a symbol of God's power in Moses' life. (00:04:45.821): I can also imagine that as Moses was aging, he was also leaning on that rod. (00:04:52.162): Do you have a rod in your life? (00:04:54.503): Something that you've become so accustomed to that you can't see your life without it. (00:04:59.606): It represents your achievements and maybe a reminder that God has done great things (00:05:04.848): for you and with you. (00:05:06.989): But there came a day shortly before the children of Israel were to enter (00:05:10.711): the promised land that they needed water to drink. (00:05:13.973): And God told Moses and his brother Aaron very clearly to speak to the rock. (00:05:19.214): But I'm going to give Moses some credit in that he was probably frustrated (00:05:23.619): with the children of Israel because here we are decades later (00:05:28.424): and God's done all kinds of amazing things to provide and protect them. (00:05:33.189): Yet they are still complaining that they've been brought into the wilderness to die. (00:05:38.384): But because Moses got arrogant and he said to them, (00:05:42.706): must we bring water for you out of this rock? (00:05:46.047): His ego got in the way and it's as if he wants he and his brother, (00:05:50.089): who had been his right-hand man and speaker, (00:05:53.010): a share of the credit and he strikes the rock twice. (00:05:58.192): Yes, water does gush out and they've got more than enough to drink, (00:06:02.914): but it costs Moses his entry into the promised land. (00:06:06.862): God may use a gift you have or an opportunity to bless you and help you achieve a goal. (00:06:13.935): However, the gift must never be made greater than the giver. (00:06:18.490): The opportunity, the job, the money, (00:06:20.573): the person must never hold greater sway in your life than God (00:06:25.590): and the word he Moses was used to having some physical action to perform (00:06:32.100): with his rod to get a result, (00:06:33.880): but God wanted him to see that now all that was needed was a word. (00:06:39.240): But he could not see beyond the way God moved in the past. (00:06:43.136): Although the people were acting in a familiar way, (00:06:46.598): the way to bring resolution wouldn't require dramatic feats and actions, (00:06:51.540): just a word spoken in obedience. (00:06:54.962): The situation may look familiar, (00:06:57.383): but I want you to know you are a different person than when the journey began. (00:07:02.526): You have only to do what Jesus said. (00:07:05.307): He told us that all we need is faith, (00:07:07.955): The size of a mustard seed and we could speak to the mountain before us and tell it (00:07:12.818): to go into the sea. (00:07:14.658): We don't need to wave a wand over anything or even dip seven times. (00:07:20.181): God is calling you to speak to the mountain in your life today. (00:07:24.568): Now Jesus is one who was forever going off script. (00:07:29.252): The Gospels are filled with stories of him doing miracles on days when little (00:07:33.835): or no work was to be done. (00:07:35.577): Healing people with mud, spit, you name it. (00:07:39.460): He gets a message that his friend Lazarus is deathly ill and he should come and see him. (00:07:45.224): But Jesus doesn't go. (00:07:47.180): Jesus then tells his disciples that Lazarus is only sick so that God's glory can be revealed. (00:07:53.422): And then later he admits that actually Lazarus is already dead, yet he still doesn't move. (00:08:00.825): When Jesus does arrive to see Mary and Martha, Lazarus' sisters, (00:08:05.846): Lazarus has been dead and buried for four days. (00:08:09.768): The superstition was that a person's spirit would hover in the area for three days (00:08:14.949): with a chance that they could be revived. (00:08:17.633): But the fact that Jesus stayed away until day four meant that Lazarus was well (00:08:22.517): and truly dead, even by local standards. (00:08:26.940): He has a discussion with the sisters, Mary and Martha, (00:08:30.864): and Jesus tells them that their brother will live again. (00:08:33.866): They thought he was talking about in the great resurrection, (00:08:37.149): but Jesus reminded them that he was the resurrection and the life. (00:08:41.771): With only a few words, Lazarus, come forth. (00:08:45.614): The brother is restored to his family and friends. (00:08:49.116): Again, we see words used to bring about a miracle. (00:08:53.359): Jesus didn't wave his hand here and shout and have a long prayer. (00:08:58.002): He simply said, come out. (00:09:00.683): It's good to make plans. (00:09:02.745): The Bible encourages us to submit our plans to the Lord. (00:09:06.993): Proverbs 6, 3 says, Commit to the Lord whatever you do and he will establish your plans. (00:09:14.240): Give God the permission to change them. (00:09:17.063): Be more in love with him than to the finer details of your agenda. (00:09:22.354): This can be difficult for the planners among us to do. (00:09:25.736): And even if you're a pantser, meaning you fly by the seat of your pants, (00:09:30.119): nothing written down, and you go with the flow, (00:09:33.261): you do expect for things to come together in the end. (00:09:36.583): We have a perceived way of how we think God will move. (00:09:40.285): We expect it to look similar to the last season we just came through. (00:09:44.808): He is not under any obligation to give you a repeat performance of your life. (00:09:50.047): Proverbs 3 verse 5 reminds us to trust in the Lord with all thine heart (00:09:55.151): and lean not unto thine own understanding. (00:09:58.453): In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths. (00:10:03.742): If your life is moving a bit off script, then if I were you, I would get excited. (00:10:09.869): God's glory is revealed in seasons of uncertainty. (00:10:14.214): He knows that when your world is shaken, (00:10:16.937): He can and will be a steady rock even when you're tired. (00:10:21.742): If nothing looks as you expected, (00:10:24.443): this is a time to lean hard on Jesus and trust him to carry you and direct you. (00:10:30.966): Fearless One, you were made to thrive. (00:10:33.807): You grow in seasons of pressure. (00:10:36.468): You learn to trust in moments when you can't see the usual path to take. (00:10:41.330): Your faith is strengthened when you persist in the face of adversity and trials. (00:10:47.483): You are blessed. (00:10:48.985): You are called to be fruitful even when life goes off tangent. (00:10:53.611): You can multiply even in the middle of drought. (00:10:57.275): You are called to dominate and stand firm in the knowledge of who you are and whose you are. (00:11:05.150): Ask the Holy Spirit for direction. (00:11:07.531): Lord, this isn't on the script. (00:11:09.871): Teach me how to improvise. (00:11:12.052): Teach me how to stand on your word, even as everything else shakes. (00:11:16.473): Know that his love for you is perfect and eternal. (00:11:20.235): Even in unfamiliar territory, you are guided. (00:11:23.996): Even in situations where you believe you messed up, he is with you. (00:11:28.617): He promises never to leave us nor forsake us. (00:11:32.778): I want to close today by blessing you. (00:11:35.209): Are blessed in the city and blessed in the field. (00:11:38.325): You are blessed when you wake up and when you lie down to sleep you are blessed (00:11:43.735): when you are at work or at play you are blessed (00:11:47.462): whether young or old you are blessed (00:11:50.935): whether employed or unemployed you are the head and not the tail you are (00:11:57.289): above and not beneath you are his favorite.
