(00:00:00.091): Hey, Fearless One, (00:00:01.212): are you living the life you want or working with what has been handed to you? (00:00:05.855): And before you answer, let me make that question a little more specific. (00:00:10.459): When you look at how you spend your days, (00:00:12.781): the work you do, (00:00:13.641): the relationships you maintain, (00:00:15.443): and the things you keep postponing, do you recognize yourself? (00:00:19.606): Is there room for the person God created you to be? (00:00:22.728): Or have you become so good at being who everybody needs (00:00:26.591): that you have stopped asking what you need? (00:00:29.740): Today, I want us to talk about designing a life we love. (00:00:34.223): A life that reflects our identity, (00:00:36.784): makes room for our gifts, and allows us to do meaningful work. (00:00:41.447): A life we can participate in with intention, even while some things remain beyond our control. (00:00:48.229): By the age of 12, I had probably changed my dream job a thousand times. (00:00:53.453): I considered medicine. (00:00:54.954): Being a fighter pilot was on the list. (00:00:56.995): I was a big Top Gun fan and the men in uniform certainly helped. (00:01:01.859): And somewhere in there was becoming a news reporter. (00:01:05.601): That last one never really came off the list. (00:01:08.383): Years later, (00:01:09.444): when I was considering leaving my role as a journalist at a I sensed (00:01:14.905): the Lord telling me that I would always be in the news business, (00:01:18.548): the good news business. (00:01:20.609): At the time, I felt called towards entrepreneurship. (00:01:24.332): I was also doing community work, (00:01:26.554): and I wasn't sure what shape my working life would take, (00:01:30.156): but that understanding gave me something to carry into the uncertainty. (00:01:35.180): The role would change. (00:01:36.921): The assignment to communicate something good, useful, and uplifting would continue. (00:01:43.538): Looking back, (00:01:44.499): I can see that thread running through my work, (00:01:47.520): writing, (00:01:48.241): speaking, (00:01:49.421): encouraging people to pursue what God has called them to do, (00:01:53.243): helping businesses communicate their value, (00:01:56.065): creating opportunities for people to see possibilities they may not have recognized (00:02:00.727): before. (00:02:01.968): The work has shown up in different forms, but at its heart has been this message. (00:02:07.731): God loves you and there is meaningful work you can do with what he has placed within you. (00:02:13.825): That thread has helped me make decisions, especially when I couldn't see the whole picture. (00:02:19.591): Perhaps you need to find your thread again. (00:02:22.654): This year has been one of redefining the goal, (00:02:26.637): discovering new dreams and dusting off some old ones. (00:02:31.222): It has also involved shaking off beliefs and attachments that were still binding me to the past. (00:02:38.021): That is not a comfortable exercise. (00:02:40.902): Some days I felt like a chameleon changing color every few hours. (00:02:46.043): I would get comfortable with one possibility, then another question would surface. (00:02:51.425): Do I still want this? (00:02:53.305): Did I ever want it or did I become good at doing it? (00:02:57.727): Am I holding on because it matters or because I don't know who I would be without it? (00:03:04.612): If you have ever gained or lost weight, (00:03:07.753): you know what it is to reach for something in your wardrobe (00:03:10.974): and realize it no longer fits. (00:03:13.374): You might be popping buttons. (00:03:15.375): You might be swimming in fabric. (00:03:17.516): Either way, there comes a point when you have to acknowledge the body you have today. (00:03:23.217): Our lives can reach that point too. (00:03:26.038): A schedule that worked five years ago may be exhausting you now. (00:03:30.683): A business model that helped you get started may no longer support the work you want to do. (00:03:35.945): A definition of success you inherited may feel increasingly expensive to maintain. (00:03:44.207): Sometimes the discomfort is telling you that something needs attention. (00:03:49.088): Before you force yourself back into the old shape, ask whether it is time to make an adjustment. (00:03:56.630): You can be grateful for a season and And still recognize that it is ending. (00:04:02.214): In the fearless framework, we begin always with blessed. (00:04:06.476): That is your identity. (00:04:08.757): Who did God create me to be? (00:04:11.418): That question matters because it is easy to design a life around comparison. (00:04:16.860): You see someone traveling, (00:04:18.981): launching a business, (00:04:20.322): getting married, (00:04:21.863): buying a home or receiving recognition, (00:04:24.864): and suddenly their life becomes the measuring stick for yours. (00:04:29.582): But you are seeing an outcome. (00:04:31.582): You may know very little about the responsibilities, (00:04:35.183): sacrifices and private realities attached to it. (00:04:39.464): Before you decide what you want your life to look like, (00:04:42.644): spend some time considering what you want it to express. (00:04:46.745): What do you value? (00:04:48.665): What matters enough for you to make room for it? (00:04:52.386): What kind of person do you want to be in your home, your work and your community? (00:04:59.015): For me, understanding that good news would remain part of my work became a filter. (00:05:05.218): Public relations, (00:05:06.538): social media, (00:05:08.099): business development and writing could all fit within that understanding. (00:05:13.161): I could use those roles to inform, encourage and help people move forward. (00:05:18.744): It also helped me recognize work that would pull me away from my values. (00:05:24.206): You need something deeper than an impressive title to guide your decisions. (00:05:29.002): Titles change. (00:05:30.883): Organizations change. (00:05:33.023): Your capacity changes. (00:05:35.184): An understanding of your identity gives you somewhere to return when those changes come. (00:05:41.646): And remember this, you are already loved by God while you are figuring things out. (00:05:47.308): You do not have to earn that love by producing a perfect plan. (00:05:51.873): I have been choosing to see this transition that many women experience in their 40s (00:05:55.995): and 50s as an opportunity to pay attention. (00:05:59.657): As for how many of those symptoms on the perimenopause list I relate to? (00:06:04.260): Too many. (00:06:05.240): I can acknowledge the discomfort and still ask what this season is making me notice. (00:06:11.183): Where am I tired? (00:06:12.924): What have I been tolerating? (00:06:15.185): What do I need support with? (00:06:17.526): What would I like the next part of my life to hold? (00:06:21.331): We often hear the phrase midlife crisis, (00:06:24.473): but we can begin asking honest questions before everything reaches a crisis. (00:06:30.178): We can make room for change while continuing to honor our responsibilities. (00:06:35.542): One of the gifts of getting older is perspective. (00:06:39.125): We have lived long enough to see where some choices lead. (00:06:42.968): We can recognize patterns and decide which ones we want to continue. (00:06:47.631): That includes patterns we inherited. (00:06:50.403): We can appreciate our parents' sacrifices and acknowledge what hurt us. (00:06:55.547): We can forgive what they did not know while choosing to learn what we need to know. (00:07:01.312): Many were working with limited options, limited support and the examples available to them. (00:07:07.417): We have an opportunity to make different decisions about family, love, money, work and success. (00:07:14.082): We can ask for help. (00:07:15.796): Learn new skills. (00:07:17.477): Have conversations that were avoided in previous generations. (00:07:22.580): Romans 12 says, (00:07:24.681): And be not conformed to this world, (00:07:27.223): but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, (00:07:30.665): that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (00:07:37.029): That gives us a practical place to begin, examining the beliefs that shape our daily choices. (00:07:44.713): If you believe rest must always be earned through exhaustion, (00:07:49.095): you will struggle to make room for it. (00:07:51.936): If you believe your value depends on being needed, (00:07:55.498): setting a boundary may feel like losing yourself. (00:07:59.339): If you believe it is too late to begin, (00:08:02.240): you may dismiss a possibility before you have explored it. (00:08:07.063): What belief keeps making decisions on your behalf and does it still deserve that authority? (00:08:14.053): The second part of the fearless framework is fruitful. (00:08:17.894): What seed has God placed within you and how are you caring for it? (00:08:23.316): We can become so focused on what is missing that we overlook what is already present. (00:08:28.957): There may be a skill you have barely developed, (00:08:32.018): an interest you keep dismissing, (00:08:34.239): experience that could help someone else, a gift that has very little room to grow. (00:08:40.033): Designing a life you love involves making space for those things. (00:08:44.714): It also means broadening how you recognize meaningful work. (00:08:48.815): Meaningful work may not come with an impressive job title or salary. (00:08:53.937): Consider a school. (00:08:55.557): The principal and the cleaner carry different responsibilities, (00:08:59.859): but both contribute to the school functioning well. (00:09:03.480): The principal provides leadership and helps staff and students work towards their goals. (00:09:08.703): The cleaner helps maintain an environment where people learn and work. (00:09:12.926): If that cleaning stops, its importance becomes obvious very quickly. (00:09:19.190): We should be careful about allowing status to determine whose contribution we value, (00:09:24.774): and we should extend that same care to ourselves. (00:09:28.737): Your current job may pay your bills while you develop something else. (00:09:33.781): It may provide stability during a demanding season. (00:09:37.414): It may give you opportunities to care for and meet people (00:09:41.016): that you would never have encountered elsewhere. (00:09:44.177): You can honor that contribution and still desire change. (00:09:49.099): Perhaps you are a nurse who sings in a community choir. (00:09:52.361): Perhaps you work at a petrol station and mentor young people. (00:09:56.482): Perhaps you are raising children while slowly building a business. (00:10:00.884): Your gifts can find expression in more than one place. (00:10:05.266): The practical question is, (00:10:07.269): The practical question is, (00:10:09.329): where could you give something within you a little more room? (00:10:13.770): Could you practice for an hour each week? (00:10:16.631): Take a course? (00:10:18.111): Join a group? (00:10:19.551): Complete the first piece of work? (00:10:22.412): A seed needs attention over time. (00:10:25.473): Give yourself a realistic way to begin. (00:10:30.133): The third part of the framework is Multiply. (00:10:33.551): How do I create value for others and expand what has been given to me? (00:10:38.874): When we imagine a life we love, we often begin with what we want to experience. (00:10:43.796): More freedom, more peace, better relationships, financial stability, travel, a home we enjoy. (00:10:52.140): Those are worth considering. (00:10:54.321): Alongside them, ask what you want to contribute. (00:10:58.644): Who benefits when you use your gifts well? (00:11:01.898): What problem could you help solve? (00:11:04.719): What could become easier, clearer, or more hopeful because you showed up? (00:11:10.100): For me, the good news thread has shaped how I use my voice. (00:11:14.780): Social media gives us plenty of opportunities to criticize, provoke, and tear down. (00:11:20.541): I can choose to use that access to inform and empower. (00:11:25.082): That choice needs to be reflected in my behavior consistently. (00:11:29.390): This is also at the heart of personal branding. (00:11:32.492): People come to understand what you stand for through what they experience of you, (00:11:37.636): how you communicate, (00:11:39.237): how you treat people, the work you accept, the commitments you keep. (00:11:44.520): Over time, consistency can help people recognize opportunities that suit you. (00:11:50.464): Clarity does not guarantee that every door will open. (00:11:54.027): It does make it easier to explain your value and recognize a good fit. (00:11:59.776): You spend less energy trying to become whatever each opportunity demands. (00:12:04.520): You ask, does this allow me to contribute in a way I believe in? (00:12:09.684): The fourth part of the framework is dominion. (00:12:13.247): How do I responsibly manage, lead, influence and build? (00:12:18.711): This is where our desires meet the diary, the budget and the commitments we have already made. (00:12:24.056): If you want more time with your family, Something may need to change in your schedule. (00:12:31.266): If you want a healthier business you may need clearer pricing, better systems or support. (00:12:37.830): If you want to write a book you need some protected writing time. (00:12:42.654): If you want rest you may have to address the habit of agreeing to everything. (00:12:48.998): A desire becomes more useful when you give it practical support. (00:12:54.162): Here is a simple example. (00:12:56.118): Think about an ordinary week in the life you want to build. (00:12:59.821): How do you want your mornings to feel? (00:13:02.764): How do you want your mornings to feel? (00:13:04.866): What work are you doing? (00:13:06.647): Who has access to your time? (00:13:09.190): Where do friendship, movement, prayer, creativity, and rest fit? (00:13:15.095): What responsibilities are you carrying and what help do you need? (00:13:20.740): Then compare that picture with your current week. (00:13:24.998): Choose one gap you can begin to address. (00:13:28.319): Perhaps it is an evening you protect, (00:13:30.919): a conversation about sharing responsibilities, (00:13:34.580): a savings plan, (00:13:36.261): an appointment you have postponed, (00:13:38.661): a commitment you need to finish before accepting another. (00:13:42.322): You do not need to redesign everything today. (00:13:45.523): You do need to give your priorities somewhere to live. (00:13:49.424): What happens when the life you want seems far away from the responsibilities you have? (00:13:55.319): This is where we need honesty and compassion. (00:13:58.600): You may be caring for children or an aging parent. (00:14:01.962): You may be recovering from illness, rebuilding after divorce, or managing a loss of income. (00:14:08.825): Some seasons offer very little flexibility. (00:14:12.587): We should acknowledge that without deciding that our desires no longer matter. (00:14:16.428): Ask yourself, (00:14:24.738): What is possible within this season and what would help create more room over time? (00:14:30.542): Perhaps leaving a job is not possible today, but updating your CV is. (00:14:36.346): Perhaps launching a business needs to wait, but speaking to potential customers can begin today. (00:14:42.931): Perhaps a long break is beyond reach, (00:14:45.693): but someone could help you protect a regular period of rest. (00:14:50.330): Some goals need to be approached in stages. (00:14:53.632): Some need to change. (00:14:55.933): A goal changing does not automatically mean you have failed. (00:15:00.134): You may have learned something important about yourself, (00:15:03.396): your responsibilities, or the cost involved. (00:15:07.077): When you review a goal, ask whether it still serves the life you are trying to build. (00:15:13.040): You are allowed to answer honestly. (00:15:15.681): You are allowed to change your mind. (00:15:19.683): I believe in being intentional. (00:15:21.844): I also know we cannot plan every meaningful part of life. (00:15:25.886): There is space between what we can do and what we cannot make happen. (00:15:31.068): That is where trust matters. (00:15:33.449): We can prepare, act, and remain open to God's direction. (00:15:38.531): We can make plans while acknowledging that we do not yet know everything. (00:15:49.799): Discover a skill. (00:15:51.620): Learn that a route is unsuitable. (00:15:54.161): Find an opportunity you could not have predicted. (00:15:57.602): Pay attention as you move and let trusted people walk with you. (00:16:03.425): Share your goal with someone who can encourage you. (00:16:06.506): Pray with you and ask useful questions. (00:16:09.568): Choose someone who can celebrate your progress and speak honestly (00:16:13.750): when your actions are moving away from what you say matters. (00:16:17.876): You do not need an audience for every stage of becoming. (00:16:21.359): You do need support. (00:16:24.241): Gratitude helps me recognize the good that is already here. (00:16:28.025): It brings my attention back to what I have received, (00:16:31.327): what I have learned, and who has stood beside me. (00:16:34.850): It does not remove disappointment or require me to pretend a difficult situation is acceptable. (00:16:41.156): I can be thankful for provision and still work towards financial change. (00:16:46.725): I can appreciate what a role has taught me and still prepare to leave it. (00:16:51.986): I can acknowledge progress while admitting that I need help. (00:16:55.888): When our attention stays fixed on what has not happened, (00:16:59.609): we can miss the life taking place around us. (00:17:03.190): Make room to notice it. (00:17:05.310): The conversation that encouraged you. (00:17:07.771): The boundary you finally kept. (00:17:10.152): The work you completed. (00:17:11.572): The quiet afternoon. (00:17:14.073): The person who showed up. (00:17:16.188): There is something to receive today, even while you are building towards tomorrow. (00:17:21.950): Before we close, I want to leave you with five questions. (00:17:25.612): Write them down and give yourself time to answer. (00:17:29.073): Where does my current life feel out of alignment with who I am and what I value? (00:17:35.276): What do I want to keep and what needs to change? (00:17:39.278): Which gift or desire needs more room to develop? (00:17:43.658): What responsibility needs a clearer plan or more support? (00:17:48.580): What is one action I can take in the next seven days? (00:17:53.301): Choose an action you can recognize when it is done. (00:17:56.843): Make the call. (00:17:58.263): Put the time in your diary. (00:18:00.344): Complete the application. (00:18:02.405): Review the budget. (00:18:03.985): Have the conversation. (00:18:06.526): If you are reading Live Fail Less, bring these questions into that reflection too. (00:18:11.640): Consider how your understanding of who you are is shaping the choices you make. (00:18:17.121): In Philippians 3 verses 13 and 14, Paul says, (00:18:40.502): As you move forward, consider what you need to stop carrying from the past. (00:18:46.165): Keep the wisdom, receive the healing and support you need. (00:18:50.827): Allow yourself to take another step. (00:18:54.329): A life you love will still require work, adjustment, and courage. (00:18:58.991): There will be days that disappoint you and responsibilities that stretch you. (00:19:03.974): There can also be joy, purpose, friendship, meaningful contribution, and room to grow. (00:19:11.172): Return to the fail-less framework. (00:19:13.573): Blessed. (00:19:14.453): Remember who you are. (00:19:16.313): Fruitful. (00:19:17.434): Develop what God has placed within you. (00:19:20.135): Multiply. (00:19:21.635): Use it to create value for others. (00:19:24.336): Dominion. (00:19:25.536): Steward your life and responsibilities with intention. (00:19:29.797): You may not be able to change everything today. (00:19:32.878): You can begin paying attention. (00:19:35.579): You can make one decision that supports the life you want to build. (00:19:39.626): And as you move, allow yourself to enjoy what is good along the way. (00:19:44.790): You are loved, blessed, and highly favored. (00:19:48.333): Live Fearless. (00:19:49.414): Thank you for listening to Fearless One with Nerissa Golden. (00:19:52.316): For more resources or to get in touch, head to nerissagolden.com.
