(00:00:00.091): Are you worried about stepping into something new and how you'll be provided for? (00:00:04.273): Today, I want to remind you that the provision is in the mission. (00:00:08.975): Hello, Fearless One. (00:00:09.955): This is Nerissa Golden and welcome to the podcast. (00:00:13.076): Be sure to subscribe wherever you listen. (00:00:15.297): Thanks so much. (00:00:16.518): One of my favorite songs is It Remains to be Seen by the Mississippi Mass Choir. (00:00:19.794): I will drop a link in the show notes. (00:00:20.919): It's a real classic. (00:00:21.760): But that's the whole podcast right there in that one sentence. (00:00:25.441): The safest place on this planet is to be living in the will of God. (00:00:42.552): That doesn't mean nothing difficult will happen there. (00:00:45.716): It means that even in difficulty, you are not outside his care. (00:00:51.203): How do you know what the will of God is for you? (00:00:54.333): I'll point you back to Genesis 1, 28 as a start. (00:00:58.617): And God blessed them and God said unto them, (00:01:01.739): Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth and subdue it and have dominion (00:01:07.864): over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over every living thing (00:01:13.129): that moveth upon the earth. (00:01:15.725): You are blessed, then instructed to be fruitful, to multiply, and to exercise dominion. (00:01:22.414): This is the pattern we keep returning to, identity, development, impact, and stewardship. (00:01:29.880): We begin with who God created us to be, (00:01:32.622): then develop what he has placed within us, (00:01:35.825): use it to serve others, and responsibly manage what he entrusts to us. (00:01:41.330): We also know that Jeremiah 29 11 says, (00:01:45.294): For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, (00:01:47.576): saith the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (00:01:54.645): You may know that last phrase as hope and a future in some other translations. (00:02:00.590): God spoke these words to people living in exile. (00:02:04.713): Their circumstances were difficult and the restoration would take time. (00:02:10.298): This wasn't a promise of an instant escape. (00:02:13.180): It was reassurance that God had not forgotten them. (00:02:16.943): I hope that fills you with hope too. (00:02:19.387): Your present circumstances do not tell the whole story of what God is doing in your life. (00:02:26.352): Numbers 23 verse 19 reminds us, (00:02:29.995): God is not a man that he should lie, neither the son of man that he should repent. (00:02:35.399): Hath he said and shall he not do it? (00:02:38.681): Or hath he spoken and shall he not make it good? (00:02:42.645): God is not human like us and capable of lying. (00:02:46.468): We can trust what he has actually promised even when we don't yet understand how it will unfold. (00:02:52.953): You matter to him. (00:02:54.515): His heart towards you is good. (00:02:56.957): If that's the case, then why do bad things happen? (00:03:01.360): We live in a fallen world. (00:03:03.794): People make choices that harm others, and we experience suffering, sickness, and loss. (00:03:11.041): Not every hardship can be traced to one person's decision or lack of faith. (00:03:15.946): Jesus himself said that we would face trouble. (00:03:19.790): In the world you shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer. (00:03:24.294): I have overcome the world. (00:03:26.456): John 16, 33. (00:03:29.705): So why doesn't God just overrule us all and make things good? (00:03:33.926): In the beginning, he said that what he had made was very good. (00:03:38.228): And even when humanity chose a different way, (00:03:41.349): he made a way through Jesus to reconcile us to himself. (00:03:45.530): Genesis 1, 31 and 2 Corinthians 5, verse 18 and 19. (00:03:52.007): We are invited to respond to him. (00:03:54.490): In one of the earliest podcasts, I spoke about the powerful word choice. (00:04:00.636): We don't get to choose everything that happens to us, (00:04:04.080): but we can make choices about how we respond and whose direction we follow. (00:04:10.042): Yes, a lot of our choices are shaped by our parents, (00:04:14.066): our environment, and the events that happened to us at an early age. (00:04:18.811): However, (00:04:19.952): the beauty in God's plan is redemption and our ability to make different decisions (00:04:25.258): as we grow in awareness. (00:04:27.901): We no longer have to live by the script and actions of others. (00:04:32.334): Your ability to choose is essential to you fulfilling the plan God has for you. (00:04:37.797): So how do we know if we are choosing our own way or God's plan? (00:04:43.521): The Word tells us in Psalm 37 verses 23 and 24, (00:04:48.704): The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way. (00:04:54.768): Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. (00:05:02.017): Notice that the passage includes someone falling. (00:05:05.698): Being guided by God does not mean you will never stumble. (00:05:09.400): It means you have someone to uphold you. (00:05:12.581): When you surrender your life to Jesus as Lord, (00:05:15.782): understanding the sacrifice he made on the cross to reconcile you to your creator, (00:05:21.264): you receive righteousness as a gift. (00:05:24.447): Righteousness is not something we can give ourselves. (00:05:28.049): Roman 5.17 calls it the gift of righteousness. (00:05:32.312): And 2 Corinthians 5.21 says, (00:05:35.474): For he hath made him to be sin for us, (00:05:38.496): who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. (00:05:44.520): This is important because your new life begins with what Jesus has done for you. (00:05:50.044): You are not trying to earn your way into being accepted by God. (00:05:54.165): When you look in the mirror and feel inadequate, (00:05:56.827): when your thoughts shout at you about all the ways you've screwed up, (00:06:00.730): when every step you take seems like you're walking in quicksand, (00:06:05.054): remembering that your righteousness is found in Jesus gives you somewhere solid (00:06:10.058): to stand. (00:06:12.780): I wish remembering this was a one-time move. (00:06:15.422): I say I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus once and I believe it (00:06:20.266): and act accordingly forever. (00:06:23.410): But no, just as we need to eat daily to nourish ourselves, (00:06:27.792): we need to keep returning to what God says about us. (00:06:31.853): You are not purchasing righteousness by repeating a declaration. (00:06:36.215): Jesus has already paid the price. (00:06:39.036): You are reminding your mind and heart of what you have received. (00:06:43.758): Romans 12 verse 2. (00:06:46.179): The more you receive this into your spirit, (00:06:48.880): the more freedom you have to walk knowing that God is with you. (00:06:54.254): So does God sit down and say, well, move there and do that? (00:06:59.081): We've spoken before about how we hear from God, and it's not one way. (00:07:04.007): Some of us experience impressions that guide us towards a certain path. (00:07:08.172): Others recognize his direction as we take the next faithful step in front of us. (00:07:12.875): We can test that guidance against scripture and seek wisdom rather (00:07:16.677): than assuming every feeling is an instruction. (00:07:19.979): If any of you lack wisdom, (00:07:21.920): let him ask of God, (00:07:23.621): that give it to all men liberally and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him. (00:07:29.305): James 1 verse 5. (00:07:32.504): Jesus described his own mission using the words of Isaiah. (00:07:35.987): These words describe Jesus' mission. (00:08:02.503): As his followers, (00:08:03.864): we participate in his work by loving, (00:08:06.386): serving, and bringing his truth and compassion into the places we occupy. (00:08:11.451): So your purpose is not necessarily one job or one activity that you do all the days (00:08:16.595): of your life. (00:08:17.776): It includes living with the understanding that you can make a difference right (00:08:21.880): where you are with the skills and wisdom God has given you. (00:08:27.157): Your personality, (00:08:28.898): your compassion, and your experience can be used to serve the people around you. (00:08:35.560): But what if you were happy on the job and then it disappears? (00:08:39.462): What if you've been trying to find a job but the rejection letters are numerous? (00:08:43.843): How could that be God's will? (00:08:46.965): Losing a job is not proof that God has abandoned you, (00:08:50.086): nor do we have to call every painful event His instruction. (00:08:54.269): We can bring the uncertainty to Him and ask Him how to move forward. (00:09:00.074): When I say the provision is in the mission, this is what I mean. (00:09:05.038): The God who calls you into relationship with Him also cares about what you need along the way. (00:09:11.904): You don't have to make yourself financially useful before you qualify for His care. (00:09:18.272): Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 verse 26, (00:09:22.155): Behold the fowls of the air, (00:09:24.297): for they sow not, (00:09:25.818): neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. (00:09:33.003): Are ye not much better than they? (00:09:35.805): He goes on to speak about how God closed the lilies, (00:09:39.548): then says, (00:09:40.749): But seek ye first the kingdom of God, (00:09:45.008): In that (00:09:50.760): passage, (00:09:51.560): Jesus is talking about our everyday needs, including food, drink, and clothing. (00:09:57.782): He invites us to put our Father at the center of our lives instead of allowing worry to rule us. (00:10:04.624): Being in the will of God is not just about working to pay bills or helping others. (00:10:10.186): Your existence matters to Him. (00:10:13.327): I have battled with this idea for most of my life. (00:10:16.249): Jesus asked, Matthew 7, 9. (00:10:17.470): Then he said, (00:10:32.987): If ye then, (00:10:33.888): being evil, (00:10:35.108): know how to give good gifts unto your children, (00:10:38.590): how much more shall your Father, (00:10:40.432): which is in heaven, give good things to them that ask him? (00:10:44.674): Matthew 7, 11. (00:10:46.855): Your heavenly Father is good. (00:10:50.037): You can ask him for what you need. (00:10:54.440): So what can make it difficult for us to recognize or receive the provision? (00:11:00.224): God is not powerless, (00:11:01.886): but our beliefs can limit the ways we permit him to work and provide in our lives. (00:11:07.771): If I believe provision can only come through money I earn myself, (00:11:12.556): I may reject the help, (00:11:14.037): opportunities or instructions he sends through another channel. (00:11:18.839): Surrender includes releasing my insistence on how the answer must come. (00:11:24.403): Father, I trust you to provide and I am willing to receive provision in the way you choose. (00:11:32.149): Can we allow God to lead us? (00:11:34.570): Can we receive help without shame? (00:11:37.403): Can we take the practical step he puts in front of us, (00:11:41.284): whether that is applying for a job, (00:11:43.425): asking for support, developing an idea, or accepting someone's kindness? (00:11:49.947): We say God helps those who help themselves, (00:11:52.748): and I used to believe it was scriptural, but that phrase is not a Bible verse. (00:11:58.430): Jesus helped a man who had been unable to walk for 38 years. (00:12:03.306): He fed a crowd of about 5,000 men with five loaves and two fish. (00:12:08.269): I am sure many of those 5,000 men were able-bodied and employed. (00:12:13.392): Yet he did not send them away. (00:12:15.813): His compassion required that he serve them. (00:12:20.016): Throughout the Old Testament, (00:12:21.917): we also see God's grace and provision in the lives of people like David, (00:12:26.819): Ruth, and Naomi, and profoundly in the story of the children of Israel. (00:12:32.003): Their time in the wilderness shows us God caring for people in a place (00:12:37.306): where they could not produce everything they needed. (00:12:40.728): They had come out of slavery in Egypt, (00:12:43.509): yet when life became difficult, (00:12:45.750): they remembered the food they had eaten there and longed to go back. (00:12:50.513): God provided manna in the wilderness. (00:12:55.476): When they first saw it, they asked, what is it? (00:13:02.068): God provided manor in the wilderness. (00:13:04.530): When they first saw it, they asked, God provided manor in the wilderness. (00:13:12.476): Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you, (00:13:24.900): And the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day (00:13:29.102): that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law or no. (00:13:33.445): Exodus 16 verse 4. (00:13:35.646): They still had instructions to follow. (00:13:38.207): They gathered it and on the sixth day they gathered enough for the Sabbath too. (00:13:43.410): God provided and they responded to his direction. (00:13:47.272): The manner continued for 40 years. (00:13:51.320): He also guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. (00:13:56.543): They traveled when the cloud moved and stayed when it rested. (00:14:01.446): Sometimes that meant waiting longer than they might have expected. (00:14:06.254): Today God's Spirit lives in those who belong to Christ. (00:14:09.691): We can ask for His guidance and learn to follow Him. (00:14:13.237): For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God, Romans 8, 14. (00:14:19.802): Being led can also include the direction to stand still. (00:14:24.125): At the Red Sea, (00:14:25.506): Moses told the people, (00:14:27.467): Fear ye not, (00:14:28.788): stand still, (00:14:29.909): and see the salvation of the Lord, (00:14:32.130): which he will show you today, Exodus 14, verse 13. (00:14:37.894): Then in verse 15, God told them to go forward. (00:14:42.015): There is a time to stand and a time to move. (00:14:45.745): The point is to follow his direction. (00:14:49.839): Their battles weren't always fought with weapons either. (00:14:53.482): In 2 Chronicles 20, Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah faced an overwhelming enemy. (00:15:00.769): They sought God and he told them, You shall not need to fight in this battle. (00:15:06.235): Set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you. (00:15:11.560): 2 Chronicles 20 verse 17 As they went out, (00:15:16.658): singers praised God ahead of the army and (00:15:19.879): the account describes God defeating their enemies. (00:15:24.540): Praise is a way to turn our attention towards the God who is with us. (00:15:29.882): It is not a payment we make to force a particular outcome. (00:15:34.084): We praise because he is worthy of celebration and as a reminder and a way (00:15:39.425): of thanksgiving when we remember we are not facing life alone. (00:15:45.536): It is not an easy task to lift your hands and praise God (00:15:49.259): when your head is telling you that you should be worrying right now. (00:15:53.001): We don't have time for this, but praising God is never wasted time. (00:15:58.565): Maybe all doors and avenues seem shut to you going out to work. (00:16:03.328): Maybe you're a caregiver to children or elderly parents and you aren't able to work (00:16:08.012): at the level you are used to. (00:16:10.273): God can make a way you cannot yet see. (00:16:13.650): You may be living with an illness that leaves you exhausted and unable to focus enough to work. (00:16:20.014): If you can sing a song or lift your hands, do that. (00:16:24.776): If all you can manage is a quiet prayer from your bed, he hears that too. (00:16:30.420): You do not have to perform to deserve his care. (00:16:34.082): It doesn't matter that you are used to being the breadwinner. (00:16:37.924): Life may have brought you to a place where you feel at the mercy of others or the system. (00:16:44.275): You don't know how to make enough money to pay your bills. (00:16:47.718): You don't even know anymore what you want to be when you grow up. (00:16:51.762): Bring that to God. (00:16:53.423): Allow him to take the lead. (00:16:56.085): Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. (00:17:01.830): In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. (00:17:06.795): Proverbs 3 verses 5 and 6. (00:17:11.248): There have been a few times in my life when I have felt incapable (00:17:14.950): of getting myself out of a tough spot. (00:17:17.831): I couldn't even come up with the name of someone who could bail me out. (00:17:21.693): But God, He is always there. (00:17:25.135): Often, I have needed to stop trying to figure out everything on my own so I can listen. (00:17:31.839): His instruction to me is not always, go and see this person or here's how to find the money. (00:17:38.470): It is usually a simple instruction to serve others, to spend time writing and listening. (00:17:44.674): He sends me to be with my children when I'm thinking that I should be trying (00:17:48.316): to make some money right now. (00:17:51.338): His ways of providing are not our own. (00:17:54.500): I have never seen him not make a way. (00:17:57.502): And when he opens the door, it's so simple. (00:18:00.844): I wonder how come I didn't think of it myself. (00:18:04.144): He is the all-knowing and wise one. (00:18:06.745): I am so glad he is on my side. (00:18:10.966): As we end today, fearless one, consider this. (00:18:14.507): Where have you confused your ability to earn with your worth to God? (00:18:20.389): Is there help you have resisted because you believe you should be able (00:18:24.390): to do everything yourself? (00:18:26.851): And what is the next step he is asking you to take? (00:18:31.462): You can live fearless knowing that your righteousness is found in Jesus. (00:18:36.726): You can come to your heavenly father because of what Christ has done rather than (00:18:41.449): the strength of your expertise or resources. (00:18:45.892): The mission begins with belonging to him. (00:18:49.395): From that place, (00:18:50.976): you can develop what he has given you, (00:18:53.798): serve others and steward the opportunities and provision that come into your hands. (00:19:00.560): Trust Him with what you cannot see. (00:19:03.466): Follow Him in what you can do today. (00:19:06.272): Your Father knows what you need. (00:19:08.757): Heavenly Father, thank you that we belong to you. (00:19:12.417): Thank you that our righteousness is a gift through Jesus Christ. (00:19:16.079): We do not have to earn your love or prove our usefulness before we can come to you. (00:19:21.982): Today we bring you our needs and our questions. (00:19:25.705): You know the bills that are due, (00:19:27.586): the applications that have gone unanswered, (00:19:30.507): the responsibilities we carry, and the changes we did not plan for. (00:19:35.750): You know where we feel tired, afraid, or ashamed to ask for help. (00:19:41.600): Help us to receive your care. (00:19:44.341): Forgive us for the times we have believed that everything depends on us. (00:19:48.982): Renew our minds where we have confused our income with our identity or our ability (00:19:55.803): to provide with our value in your eyes. (00:19:59.224): Holy Spirit, give us wisdom for this season. (00:20:03.504): Show us when to move and when to wait. (00:20:07.146): Help us to recognize your direction and act on it. (00:20:10.747): Give us courage to ask, (00:20:12.808): humility to receive, (00:20:14.448): and discernment to recognize the opportunities and support you placed before us. (00:20:20.510): Father, provide for those who are listening today. (00:20:24.291): Bring food, shelter, work, practical help, and rest where they're needed. (00:20:30.853): Strengthen those who are ill and those who are caring for others. (00:20:35.818): Remind them that they are seen and loved, even when they have very little strength left. (00:20:42.159): Help us also to notice where we can be part of your provision for someone else. (00:20:47.500): Teach us to use our skills, our time, and our resources with generosity and wisdom. (00:20:54.961): We surrender our plans to you. (00:20:57.602): We do not have every answer, but we trust your character. (00:21:02.263): Lead us in the next fateful step.
