(00:00:00.031): Hello, Fearless One. (00:00:01.373): I've been thinking about when I first got glasses and how much they changed the way I could see. (00:00:06.420): Until then, I hadn't realized how blurry the world had become. (00:00:10.506): I had been accepting it as normal because it was the way I was used to seeing. (00:00:20.132): The world hadn't suddenly changed, but I could see more clearly. (00:00:27.898): And it made me question, how often does that happen in our lives? (00:00:31.519): We think we know what a situation means. (00:00:34.160): We think we know what people are like. (00:00:36.461): We think we know what is possible for us. (00:00:39.442): But what if some of what we're seeing is being shaped by a lens we've been wearing (00:00:44.485): since we were 8 or 10 or 15? (00:00:48.167): What if we've grown up, but the meaning we gave an experience hasn't grown with us? (00:00:53.870): Today, we're talking about changing that lens. (00:00:57.072): But before we get into it, (00:00:58.713): follow or subscribe wherever you're listening and share this episode with someone (00:01:03.055): who is ready to see their life with fresh eyes. (00:01:06.177): Think about a child in a classroom who can't clearly see the words on the board. (00:01:11.079): They become frustrated. (00:01:12.840): They stop participating. (00:01:14.661): They might avoid the work because it feels difficult or embarrassing. (00:01:18.682): An adult may assume they aren't trying or wonder whether there is a learning difficulty. (00:01:24.245): But in this example, (00:01:25.505): part of the problem is that the child simply cannot see what they are being asked (00:01:29.387): to read. (00:01:30.367): The right support starts with understanding what is happening. (00:01:34.310): Now imagine that same child deciding, I'm stupid. (00:01:38.783): I'm not good at learning. (00:01:40.748): Even when the difficulty is addressed, that conclusion might remain. (00:01:45.230): And that is the part I want us to think about. (00:01:47.730): An experience happens. (00:01:49.431): We give it a meaning. (00:01:50.491): Then we begin to organize our lives around that meaning. (00:01:54.092): Someone leaves and we decide we aren't worth staying for. (00:01:57.814): We grow up hearing arguments about money and we decide money always brings trouble. (00:02:03.215): We're laughed at when we speak and we decide it is safer to remain quiet. (00:02:08.826): Those conclusions can feel like facts because we've carried them for so long. (00:02:13.888): But we need to ask whether they tell the whole truth. (00:02:16.829): In 1 Corinthians 13 verse 11, (00:02:19.729): Paul describes how as a child, (00:02:22.290): his speech, understanding, and thinking were those of a child. (00:02:26.812): Becoming a man involved putting away childish things. (00:02:31.133): Then in verse 12, he uses the image of seeing through a glass darkly. (00:02:36.496): He is talking about a mirror and (00:02:38.478): about how incomplete our present understanding is compared with the fullness (00:02:43.240): to come. (00:02:44.701): He isn't talking about prescription glasses, (00:02:47.143): but his words give us a useful invitation to humility. (00:02:51.205): We don't see everything. (00:02:53.006): We don't know everything. (00:02:55.007): And we can apply that to the way we understand our own stories. (00:02:59.869): At eight years old, (00:03:01.489): you could only interpret an experience with the understanding (00:03:05.051): and information available to you at eight. (00:03:10.493): You couldn't know every pressure the adults around you were under. (00:03:14.034): You couldn't understand every complicated relationship. (00:03:17.815): You might not have had anyone helping you make sense of what was happening. (00:03:23.542): So perhaps you made yourself the explanation. (00:03:26.583): It must be my fault. (00:03:28.043): There must be something wrong with me. (00:03:30.644): If I were better, they would love me differently. (00:03:34.285): Now you're an adult. (00:03:35.766): You have more knowledge, more language, and more choices. (00:03:39.847): You can revisit that conclusion. (00:03:43.048): Putting away childish things does not mean shaming the child you were. (00:03:48.630): That child needed care. (00:03:50.770): They were trying to understand their world. (00:03:53.808): It means allowing your understanding to mature. (00:03:58.512): You can say, (00:03:59.293): I understand why I believed that then but I no longer have to build my life around (00:04:06.419): that belief. (00:04:08.561): Let's be clear about something. (00:04:10.643): Seeing an experience differently does not require you to call something harmful good. (00:04:16.800): If someone mistreated you, a mature perspective does not make their behavior acceptable. (00:04:22.662): You don't have to invent a reason for it, minimize it, or give that person access to you again. (00:04:30.365): What can change is the conclusion you carry about yourself. (00:04:35.026): Someone's failure to care for you does not establish that you are unworthy of care. (00:04:41.249): Being betrayed does not mean you deserved betrayal. (00:04:45.878): Being overlooked does not mean you have nothing to offer. (00:04:50.980): You may never know every reason another person acted as they did. (00:04:55.842): You can still recognize that their actions do not define your value. (00:05:01.525): This is where our fearless framework begins. (00:05:04.706): Blessed. (00:05:05.987): Identity. (00:05:07.528): Ask yourself, Who did God create me to be? (00:05:11.372): If I answer that question entirely through rejection, (00:05:15.033): disappointment, (00:05:16.454): or someone else's opinion, (00:05:18.534): I may spend my life trying to become acceptable to people who are never equipped (00:05:23.536): to tell me who I am. (00:05:24.576): I need to bring my understanding of myself back to God. (00:05:29.838): What has he said about me? (00:05:32.019): What has he placed within me? (00:05:34.560): What am I treating as a verdict that he has never given? (00:05:39.703): From there, being fruitful is development. (00:05:43.604): I begin to grow the capacity to think and respond differently. (00:05:47.926): Multiply is impact. (00:05:50.227): I become more willing to contribute what I have instead of continually hiding it. (00:05:55.989): And dominion is stewardship. (00:05:58.230): I take responsibility for the choices, boundaries, and habits through which I live. (00:06:04.332): An old interpretation can influence all four. (00:06:08.063): Renewing it can change how we move through each one. (00:06:12.325): So how do we do this? (00:06:14.325): Romans chapter 12 verse 2 connects transformation with the renewing of our minds. (00:06:20.708): There is work here. (00:06:22.708): We learn to examine what we have accepted, (00:06:25.610): bring it before God, and practice living from a clearer understanding. (00:06:30.771): Let me give you five steps. (00:06:33.225): First, notice where the old lens shows up. (00:06:37.367): You don't have to revisit your entire childhood today. (00:06:40.709): Start with one present situation. (00:06:43.731): Perhaps someone hasn't replied to a message and immediately you feel rejected. (00:06:49.134): Perhaps you need to send an invoice and you feel guilty about asking to be paid. (00:06:54.317): Perhaps an opportunity opens and before you've considered it, (00:06:58.339): you've decided someone like you could never do it. (00:07:01.801): Pause. (00:07:03.313): Ask, what am I assuming this means? (00:07:08.177): Second, separate the event from your interpretation. (00:07:13.201): The events might be they haven't replied. (00:07:17.024): The interpretation might be I don't matter to them. (00:07:21.467): Those are different statements. (00:07:24.129): Maybe there is a problem. (00:07:26.851): Maybe they're busy. (00:07:28.412): At this point, you may not have enough information. (00:07:32.587): You can acknowledge what you feel without treating the first explanation that comes (00:07:37.191): to mind as a settled fact. (00:07:40.294): Third, ask where did you learn that meaning? (00:07:44.577): When did I begin to believe that asking for something makes me a burden? (00:07:49.862): When did I decide that having money would make me selfish? (00:07:54.886): When did I learn that being visible was dangerous? (00:07:59.567): You may notice a specific memory, a repeated message, or an atmosphere you grew up in. (00:08:05.968): You may not know immediately. (00:08:08.429): Give yourself room to reflect without forcing an answer. (00:08:12.890): Fourth, look for a truer understanding. (00:08:17.231): Ask God to help you see what you have missed. (00:08:20.992): Consider the evidence you have today. (00:08:23.725): Consider the skills you've developed, (00:08:26.046): the people who have supported you and the choices available to you now. (00:08:31.770): If your old conclusion was that you aren't capable, (00:08:35.432): a truer understanding might be, (00:08:37.893): I struggled then, but I have and will continue to learn with the right support. (00:08:44.572): If your old conclusion was that you must please everyone to keep relationships, (00:08:50.155): a truer understanding might be, I can care about people and have boundaries. (00:08:56.638): If your old conclusion was that money only creates trouble, (00:09:01.020): a truer understanding might be, (00:09:02.881): I can learn to manage money responsibly and use it to support my family, (00:09:08.804): my work and my community. (00:09:12.393): Choose something truthful enough to live by. (00:09:15.794): You don't have to pretend you feel fearless. (00:09:19.715): Fifth, take one action from that understanding. (00:09:24.397): Send the invoice. (00:09:26.077): Ask for clarification instead of assuming rejection. (00:09:29.999): Accept help. (00:09:31.719): Express a preference. (00:09:33.960): Make the application. (00:09:36.161): Your new understanding needs a place to become practice. (00:09:43.369): Does making that choice mean every painful memory disappears? (00:09:47.992): No. (00:09:49.093): You might understand something differently and still feel the old fear. (00:09:53.996): You might respond well today and struggle with the same situation next week. (00:09:59.319): That does not mean you have made no progress. (00:10:02.541): When you notice the old conclusion returning, (00:10:05.643): you can ask again, is this what is happening to me now? (00:10:09.745): Or is this the meaning I've carried from before? (00:10:13.295): Then choose your next response. (00:10:16.618): Sometimes you will need support to do that. (00:10:19.500): A trusted person, (00:10:21.321): a counselor, (00:10:22.302): or another qualified professional can help you work through experiences (00:10:26.445): that are difficult for you to revisit alone. (00:10:29.708): Getting help can be one of the choices you make for your future. (00:10:33.871): You don't have to measure growth by whether you ever remember the past. (00:10:38.875): Notice whether you're gaining more freedom in how you respond. (00:10:43.515): Can you pause where you once reacted immediately? (00:10:47.276): Can you ask a question where you once assumed the worst? (00:10:51.677): Can you make a different choice even while the old feeling is still present? (00:10:57.279): That is meaningful progress. (00:11:00.640): In Isaiah 43, God speaks to his people about a new act of deliverance. (00:11:06.722): In verse 19, he says, he will do a new thing and asks whether they will recognize it. (00:11:13.505): That's a Selah moment right there. (00:11:16.107): Could I be so focused on how things have always been that I fail (00:11:20.630): to recognize what is opening in front of me? (00:11:23.992): Could I meet someone kind and spend the whole time waiting for them (00:11:27.935): to become someone from my past? (00:11:31.378): Could I receive an opportunity and only see the last time something went wrong? (00:11:37.462): We still need discernment. (00:11:39.522): We still need boundaries. (00:11:41.564): We still need to look at the evidence, but we also need room for something new. (00:11:48.309): Lamentations chapter 3, 22 to 23 speaks of God's mercies being new every morning. (00:11:55.916): Those words sit within a book of grief. (00:11:59.159): Hope appears there without pretending the suffering never happened. (00:12:03.522): That gives us a way to approach our own days. (00:12:06.965): Yesterday happened. (00:12:08.662): Its consequences may still need attention. (00:12:11.965): And today, there is mercy to meet us as we take the next step. (00:12:17.250): You can try again. (00:12:18.912): You can learn something you weren't taught. (00:12:21.654): You can build a healthier relationship with money. (00:12:24.897): You can discover that you have more to contribute than you once believed. (00:12:29.621): You can allow today's evidence to challenge yesterday's assumptions. (00:12:36.246): Before we finish, take these questions with you. (00:12:40.749): Where am I still interpreting adult life through a conclusion I made as a child? (00:12:46.413): What happened and what did I decide it meant about me? (00:12:51.496): What do I understand now that I couldn't understand then? (00:12:56.079): What might change if I brought that conclusion before God and allowed Him to challenge it? (00:13:02.908): And what is one action I can take this week from a clearer understanding? (00:13:08.834): Write down three things, (00:13:10.655): the experience, (00:13:11.996): the meaning you've carried, and a truer understanding you can begin to practice. (00:13:18.042): Start with something manageable. (00:13:20.244): You don't need to solve your whole story in one sitting. (00:13:24.355): In my book, (00:13:25.116): Live Fairless, (00:13:25.997): A Christian Entrepreneur's Guide to Life and Business, (00:13:29.060): I explore identity and what becomes possible when we build from who God created us (00:13:34.425): to be. (00:13:35.386): If this conversation has raised questions about your own identity, (00:13:39.490): the book is a place to continue. (00:13:42.192): Fairless one, you were working with the understanding you had then. (00:13:47.563): You are allowed to grow beyond it. (00:13:50.304): You can honor what you survived, (00:13:52.565): take care of what still hurts, and make room for the life you have today. (00:13:58.487): This week, when a familiar conclusion rises up, pause long enough to examine it. (00:14:05.530): Ask God for clarity. (00:14:07.771): Look at what is actually in front of you. (00:14:10.992): Choose one response that reflects who you are becoming. (00:14:15.334): Thank you for listening to Fearless One.
