(00:00:00.071): Hello, fearless one. (00:00:01.552): When was the last time you did something simply because it was fun? (00:00:05.513): Not because it was productive. (00:00:07.374): Not because it would improve your health, (00:00:09.154): grow your business, generate content, or help you reach a goal. (00:00:13.656): You did it because it made you laugh, because it made you curious, because you enjoyed it. (00:00:19.261): When was the last time you danced badly in your kitchen, (00:00:22.544): sang loudly even though you did not know all the words, (00:00:25.647): played dominoes, (00:00:26.849): painted, ran through the rain, or tried something you were absolutely terrible at? (00:00:32.534): When was the last time you played? (00:00:35.537): Somewhere along the way, many of us became very serious people. (00:00:40.102): Everything has to have a purpose. (00:00:41.963): Everything has to produce a result. (00:00:44.140): Even rest has become something we optimize so we can return to work and perform better. (00:00:49.483): We do not go for a walk just to see where the road leads. (00:00:52.445): We track the steps, measure the distance and calculate the calories. (00:00:56.567): We do not try a hobby simply because it looks interesting. (00:01:00.289): We immediately wonder whether it could become a side hustle. (00:01:03.851): I am so guilty of this. (00:01:05.572): We cannot make a cake without photographing it, posting it. (00:01:09.568): And checking how many people liked it. (00:01:11.569): Some of us do not even know how to enjoy a beautiful moment without reaching (00:01:15.530): for our phones to capture it. (00:01:17.171): We are physically present, but our minds are somewhere else. (00:01:21.073): Planning tomorrow, replaying yesterday, anticipating what could go wrong. (00:01:26.795): Trying to turn every experience into something useful. (00:01:30.576): Today, I want to invite you to do something wonderfully unproductive. (00:01:35.215): Go and play. (00:01:36.576): Before we continue, please follow or subscribe wherever you are listening. (00:01:41.358): Share this episode with someone who has been carrying the weight of life for too long. (00:01:45.779): And when you finish listening, (00:01:47.460): leave a comment and tell me one way you plan to add more play to your life. (00:01:51.682): Thank you so much. (00:01:53.022): Have you ever watched a young child play? (00:01:55.303): A cardboard box becomes a boat, a house, or a rocket going to the moon. (00:01:59.965): A stick becomes a sword. (00:02:01.946): A puddle becomes an invitation. (00:02:04.682): Children do not need perfect conditions to play. (00:02:07.504): They use what is available. (00:02:09.505): They become completely absorbed in the moment they are living. (00:02:13.727): They are not standing in the puddle worrying about (00:02:15.948): whether there will be another puddle tomorrow. (00:02:18.570): They are not creating a five-year puddle strategy. (00:02:21.771): They see the opportunity in front of them and jump. (00:02:25.113): Jesus said in Matthew 6, (00:02:26.814): 34, Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. (00:02:31.917): Each day has enough trouble of its own. (00:02:34.480): We often hear that as an instruction to stop worrying, (00:02:37.561): but it is also an invitation to return to today, (00:02:40.682): this day, (00:02:42.243): this conversation, (00:02:43.643): this meal, (00:02:44.864): this patch of sunlight coming through the window, (00:02:47.765): this unexpected opportunity, this moment with someone you love. (00:02:52.766): Life is not only happening in the future you are trying to build, life is happening right now. (00:02:58.288): If you are always preparing for the next season, you can miss the one you prayed to enter. (00:03:03.903): If you are always waiting for something to change before you allow yourself (00:03:07.284): to enjoy life, you may spend years postponing joy. (00:03:10.964): I will enjoy myself when the business makes more money you say. (00:03:15.865): I will rest when the work is finished. (00:03:18.386): I will travel when everything is stable. (00:03:21.126): I will play when the children are older. (00:03:23.046): I will be happy when I am healed. (00:03:25.327): I will enjoy my life when I have someone to enjoy it with. (00:03:29.868): But what if joy is available right here? (00:03:33.252): Not because everything is perfect, but because God is present. (00:03:37.917): Remember, God is with you on the journey. (00:03:40.339): Psalm 1611 says, (00:03:48.213): Joy is found in his presence, (00:03:50.836): not only at the destination, (00:03:52.457): not only after the answer arrives, (00:03:54.879): not only when the test results change, (00:03:57.161): the money comes in, the business succeeds or the relationship is restored. (00:04:01.786): Joy is available in God's presence right now. (00:04:06.270): That does not mean every part of your life will feel fun. (00:04:09.593): Heartbreak is not fun. (00:04:11.395): Illness is not fun. (00:04:13.165): Grief, disappointment, and uncertainty are not games. (00:04:17.148): But even in difficult places, we do not travel alone. (00:04:21.451): The Israelites were not alone in the wilderness. (00:04:23.652): God was with them. (00:04:25.053): David was not alone when he faced Goliath. (00:04:27.495): God was with him. (00:04:29.056): Daniel was not alone in the lion's den. (00:04:31.778): God was with him. (00:04:33.499): Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not alone in the fire. (00:04:38.002): Someone else was seen walking in it with them. (00:04:41.127): The presence of God did not always remove the difficult place. (00:04:44.890): His presence changed how they experienced it. (00:04:48.633): We often assume peace will come when God removes the problem, (00:04:52.797): but sometimes peace comes when we realize He has entered it with us. (00:04:57.341): You may not know what is around the next corner, but God does. (00:05:00.924): You may not have enough information to create a 10-step plan, (00:05:04.467): but you do not need 10 steps right now. (00:05:06.929): You need enough light for the step in front of you. (00:05:10.250): When something unexpected happens, (00:05:12.131): you can turn to God and say, Father, I did not see this coming, but you did. (00:05:17.713): Show me what to do with it. (00:05:19.934): God, I do not know how to solve this. (00:05:22.895): Give me your wisdom. (00:05:24.876): Lord, I am afraid of what might happen. (00:05:28.077): Help me return to what is true today. (00:05:31.339): Father, this is too heavy for me. (00:05:33.920): I give it to you. (00:05:35.641): You do not have to carry every possible version of tomorrow. (00:05:39.335): You can ask God for help as each situation arises. (00:05:43.178): That is one of the ways life becomes lighter. (00:05:46.160): You stop trying to be God and start trusting the one who is. (00:05:50.584): I've been thinking about how differently we experience a journey when we trust (00:05:54.287): the person leading it. (00:05:55.988): If I'm traveling with someone who knows the way, I do not need to study every road sign. (00:06:00.651): I can look out of the window. (00:06:02.553): I can enjoy the scenery. (00:06:04.432): I can notice the strange little shop at the side of the road. (00:06:07.515): I can laugh at the wrong turn because I trust that we will find our way again. (00:06:12.519): But when I believe everything depends on me, I cannot relax. (00:06:16.962): Every delay becomes a disaster. (00:06:19.244): Every wrong turn becomes evidence that I have failed. (00:06:22.887): Every unexpected event feels like a threat to the plan. (00:06:26.650): We need plans. (00:06:27.791): I am a strategist. (00:06:29.133): I believe in direction, preparation, and wise stewardship. (00:06:32.637): But a plan is a tool. (00:06:33.857): It is not God. (00:06:36.198): Sometimes the interruption is where the story is. (00:06:39.520): Sometimes a detour introduces you to someone you needed to meet. (00:06:43.921): Sometimes a thing that did not work gives you the information you need for the next attempt. (00:06:49.143): Sometimes what looks like a delay is simply protection. (00:06:53.245): Sometimes God is doing something entirely different from what you expected and (00:06:57.427): And you will only notice it if you stop fighting the moment long enough to ask, (00:07:01.770): God, what are you showing me here? (00:07:04.553): Romans 8.28 tells us that God works all things for the good of those who love Him (00:07:10.077): and are called according to His purpose. (00:07:12.679): All things. (00:07:13.900): The victories and the wrong turns. (00:07:16.522): The finished manuscripts and the ones still sitting in a folder. (00:07:20.665): The business that worked and the one that taught you what never to do again. (00:07:25.095): The open door and the closed one. (00:07:28.057): God wastes nothing. (00:07:30.700): That means you don't have to be terrified of making an imperfect move. (00:07:34.803): You can try. (00:07:36.064): You can explore. (00:07:37.345): You can experiment. (00:07:38.946): You can learn. (00:07:40.708): You can approach parts of life with curiosity rather than fear. (00:07:45.011): Instead of asking, what if this goes wrong? (00:07:47.814): You can also ask, what might I discover? (00:07:51.138): Instead of demanding that every attempt succeed, you can allow an experience to teach you. (00:07:56.603): Instead of treating life like an examination you are terrified of failing, (00:08:01.067): you can receive it as an adventure you are taking with God. (00:08:04.811): Hey, fearless one, this is Nerissa Golden. (00:08:07.053): I know you already have a copy of my book, (00:08:09.195): Live Fairless, (00:08:10.276): A Christian Entrepreneur's Guide to Life and Business on your bookshelf or (00:08:13.419): on your Kindle. (00:08:14.140): Thank you so much for buying it. (00:08:15.750): Let me just say, you are allowed to enjoy your life. (00:08:17.051): Some of us feel guilty when life becomes enjoyable. (00:08:18.512): We know people who are struggling. (00:08:19.912): We remember the things that have gone wrong. (00:08:42.072): We are aware that another difficult season may come. (00:08:45.113): So even in good moments, we brace ourselves. (00:08:48.174): We do not fully laugh because something might happen. (00:08:51.155): We do not fully love because someone might leave. (00:08:53.916): We do not fully celebrate because the next season might be hard. (00:08:57.718): But refusing to enjoy today will not protect you from tomorrow. (00:09:01.519): It only takes today away from you too. (00:09:06.062): Ecclesiastes 3 tells us there's a time to weep and a time to laugh, (00:09:09.965): a time to mourn and a time to dance. (00:09:13.167): Scripture makes room for both. (00:09:15.428): You do not have to deny your grief to laugh. (00:09:18.250): You do not have to forget what happened to enjoy what remains. (00:09:21.792): You can be healing and still play. (00:09:24.614): You can be receiving treatment and still make plans. (00:09:28.236): You can be rebuilding and still celebrate progress. (00:09:32.075): You can be uncertain about tomorrow and still enjoy today. (00:09:36.437): Play is not evidence that the painful experience did not matter. (00:09:40.319): It is evidence that pain does not own every part of you. (00:09:44.541): After heartbreak, (00:09:46.002): play can help you rediscover who you are outside of the relationship and outside of (00:09:50.144): the loss. (00:09:51.544): After illness, (00:09:52.965): play can help you reconnect with your body without treating it only as something (00:09:57.107): to monitor, medicate, or fix. (00:09:59.872): After disappointment, (00:10:01.333): play can remind you that one failed plan did not end your capacity to imagine. (00:10:07.336): After years of responsibility, (00:10:09.396): play can introduce you to parts of yourself you buried (00:10:12.298): because you were busy surviving. (00:10:14.959): Blessed people can play. (00:10:17.060): Genesis tells us that God blessed humanity before he gave them an assignment. (00:10:21.702): Blessed came first, (00:10:23.243): before the work, (00:10:24.384): before the fruitfulness, (00:10:25.805): before the multiplying, before the responsibility to have dominion. (00:10:31.268): You are not valuable because of how much you produce. (00:10:34.310): You do not have to earn the right to experience joy. (00:10:37.332): You are loved and blessed by God before you complete another task. (00:10:42.716): When you understand that, you can work without making work your entire identity. (00:10:48.361): You can build a business without turning every waking moment into business development. (00:10:53.829): You can create without demanding that everything you make becomes profitable. (00:10:58.756): You can learn something without needing to master it. (00:11:02.241): You can do something badly and still enjoy yourself Imagine that. (00:11:07.472): You can be terrible at karaoke and still sing. (00:11:10.334): You can lose at dominoes and still laugh. (00:11:13.356): You can paint something nobody recognizes and still hang it on your wall. (00:11:17.739): You can start a garden, accidentally kill three plants and try again. (00:11:22.382): Not every activity needs to become evidence of your excellence. (00:11:26.725): Play gives you permission to be a beginner. (00:11:29.407): It teaches you to experiment. (00:11:31.228): It builds creativity. (00:11:32.849): It helps you become more comfortable with uncertainty. (00:11:36.110): It reminds you that mistakes do not have to become identity statements. (00:11:40.134): Sometimes you missed the ball. (00:11:41.956): Sometimes the cake fell. (00:11:43.798): Sometimes your team lost. (00:11:45.739): Sometimes you chose the wrong road. (00:11:48.022): You adjust. (00:11:48.902): You laugh. (00:11:49.683): You learn. (00:11:50.624): You continue. (00:11:52.577): Lately, I've been assessing my life in business. (00:11:55.558): I was saddened to realize that I'd lost some of the joy and work I used to love. (00:12:00.200): I had become distracted by circumstances and so focused on what needed (00:12:05.002): to happen next that I stopped experiencing what was happening right now. (00:12:09.944): I had to return to the goal that mattered most, (00:12:13.066): being obedient to the call on my life and operating from a place of blessed first, (00:12:18.951): not frantic first, not fearful first, not productive first, blessed first. (00:12:25.696): I do not want to build a life I am too exhausted to experience. (00:12:29.519): I do not want to reach a destination and realize I miss the scenery, (00:12:33.762): the conversations, the lessons and the laughter that were available along the way. (00:12:38.553): I want to enjoy the journey with God. (00:12:40.774): I want to be present enough to notice what he is doing. (00:12:44.315): I want to slow down enough to hear when he says, look at this. (00:12:48.176): I want to trust him enough to laugh when the plan changes and ask, (00:12:51.837): all right, God, where are we going now? (00:12:55.238): So how can you add more play to your life? (00:12:58.459): Play is anything you can enjoy without requiring it to prove your worth, (00:13:03.380): earn you money, or produce a useful result. (00:13:07.204): It might be putting on music and dancing badly in the kitchen, as I said earlier. (00:13:11.765): Painting, even though nobody will ever buy it. (00:13:14.966): Trying a new recipe. (00:13:16.066): This is actually what I'm doing more of now. (00:13:18.467): Playing dominoes with friends. (00:13:20.447): Going to the beach. (00:13:21.987): Wearing that very bright outfit. (00:13:24.468): Taking yourself somewhere beautiful. (00:13:26.848): Learning something simply because it interests you. (00:13:30.229): Gardening. (00:13:31.249): Gentle movement. (00:13:32.590): Singing. (00:13:33.370): Swimming. (00:13:34.542): Completing a puzzle or sitting outside with people who make you laugh. (00:13:38.704): The activity does not have to be impressive. (00:13:41.326): It just needs to bring a little life back into the room. (00:13:45.508): This week, I want you to choose one thing to do purely because you enjoy it. (00:13:50.471): Not because it will improve your business, make you more productive or impress anyone. (00:13:55.845): Give yourself at least 30 minutes to enjoy something without it turning (00:13:59.507): into content, income, or achievement. (00:14:02.428): If 30 minutes feels like too much, begin with five. (00:14:06.451): Sing, color, dance, sit in the sun, watch something funny. (00:14:12.294): Take the long way home and notice what is around you. (00:14:16.115): If you want to play with other people, (00:14:17.956): invite someone for dominoes, coffee, (00:14:20.897): karaoke, (00:14:22.177): a picnic or an afternoon doing something neither of you is particularly good at. (00:14:26.639): And while you are doing it, resist the temptation to rush towards the next thing. (00:14:31.841): Stay there. (00:14:33.062): Experience it. (00:14:34.422): Thank God for it. (00:14:35.943): Let the moment be enough. (00:14:38.704): If nothing sounds enjoyable yet, do not condemn yourself. (00:14:42.832): After prolonged grief, stress, or illness, desire can take time to return. (00:14:48.236): Begin with curiosity. (00:14:50.058): Ask yourself, what feels a little lighter than everything else? (00:14:53.901): Here are a few reflection questions to consider. (00:14:57.504): What did I enjoy doing before life became so serious? (00:15:02.247): When was the last time I laughed without checking the time? (00:15:06.131): What have I stopped doing because it doesn't appear productive? (00:15:09.920): Who helps me feel lighter and more like myself? (00:15:13.522): What kind of play can my body and current circumstances support? (00:15:17.985): What would I try if I did not need to be good at it? (00:15:21.668): Am I so focused on planning my future that I am failing to experience my life today? (00:15:27.271): Where am I trying to control tomorrow instead of trusting God with it? (00:15:32.015): What can I hand over to God today so I can become present again? (00:15:36.893): I will add these questions to the show notes so you can work through them in your quiet time. (00:15:41.874): Fearless one, you are not traveling alone. (00:15:45.015): God is with you in the victories, (00:15:47.076): the delays, the surprises, the ordinary days, and the difficult places. (00:15:52.797): When trouble appears, turn to him. (00:15:55.538): Ask for his wisdom. (00:15:57.058): Ask for his help. (00:15:58.659): Ask him to carry what is too heavy for you. (00:16:01.260): Then return to the moment you have been given. (00:16:03.880): Notice the beauty. (00:16:05.161): Receive the lessons. (00:16:06.815): Laugh when you can. (00:16:08.376): Try something new. (00:16:09.837): Enjoy the people around you. (00:16:12.218): Go and play. (00:16:13.839): You are loved and blessed by the one who is always with you. (00:16:17.761): You are his favorite. (00:16:19.601): Live Fearless. (00:16:20.802): This podcast is intended to encourage and inform. (00:16:23.924): It is not a substitute for medical advice, (00:16:26.145): mental health care, professional counseling, or pastoral support. (00:16:30.607): If you are struggling, please reach out to a qualified professional or someone you trust. (00:16:35.466): If you feel you may harm yourself or are in immediate danger, (00:16:39.090): contact your local emergency services or crisis support service now. (00:16:44.236): Until next time, remember who you are, whose you are, and live fearless.
