(00:00:00.071): Have you ever had your heart broken? (00:00:01.912): I mean, chest aching, cannot eat, cannot sleep, cannot imagine feeling whole again heartbreak. (00:00:09.657): Today, I want to introduce you to a friend who is not frightened by wounded hearts. (00:00:13.900): He does not ask you to hide the broken pieces or pretend that everything is fine. (00:00:18.562): His name is Jesus. (00:00:20.704): Hello, fearless one. (00:00:21.844): I'm Nerissa Golden. (00:00:22.965): And today we are talking about what happens when heartbreak begins affecting how we think. (00:00:28.623): I know today's topic isn't the kind we want to deal with at all in our lives, (00:00:36.249): but I feel led to do this. (00:00:38.250): And if you know someone who is dealing with a broken heart (00:00:41.353): or life's disappointments right now, (00:00:43.454): I want you to share it with them and add a little note about your desire for them (00:00:47.077): to be healed and whole. (00:00:49.058): I'm going to tell on my big sis for a minute. (00:00:51.220): We used to share a room as children (00:00:53.662): and I remember she would always be reading these Mills and Boone's romance novels. (00:00:57.625): Color me surprised the other day to see Mills and Boone's novels are still in print, (00:01:01.408): just more modern. (00:01:03.250): But anyway, she would have the books and always hiding them when my parents came in the room. (00:01:08.094): And I guess I would sneak to see what she was reading and eventually began sneaking (00:01:12.397): to read them too. (00:01:13.757): Of course, that eventually leads to daydreaming that one day you would fall in love. (00:01:18): And of course, in the inevitable course of the relationship, the man breaks your heart. (00:01:22.243): And I swear you felt that heartbreak as if it were real in your own 12 year old way. (00:01:26.967): But in many ways, (00:01:28.328): as much as in my imagination, (00:01:30.189): I could feel the ache and longing as if I'd been in love with this dashing hero. (00:01:35.673): I also knew it wasn't real. (00:01:37.955): Well, I was completely shocked the first time I really had my heart broken. (00:01:43.966): That it wasn't metaphorical. (00:01:45.747): It isn't imagination. (00:01:47.467): I swear if a doctor had cut me open, he would find my heart in pieces. (00:01:52.989): That stuff really hurts. (00:01:54.950): I don't mean to make light of it, but it is a genuine pain that you feel in your physical body. (00:02:01.272): It also wounds your spirit and leaves a scar. (00:02:04.593): That experience taught me that heartbreak is not merely a poetic idea. (00:02:08.914): Emotional pain can be felt in the body. (00:02:12.067): But I also learned that what we do with that pain determines whether it becomes part (00:02:16.310): of our story or takes control of the story. (00:02:20.393): One more confession. (00:02:21.994): I don't let my cuts just heal and keep it moving. (00:02:25.197): I am going to mess with that thing even as the body does what it does. (00:02:29.920): And wouldn't you know you ripped that scab off and you're bleeding again? (00:02:33.903): I want you to know today that Jesus is asking you to stop playing with the cut. (00:02:37.826): Playing with the cut can look like repeatedly checking someone's social media. (00:02:42.063): Rehearsing what happened, (00:02:43.924): returning to conversations that cannot change the outcome, (00:02:47.747): using the wound as proof that no one can be trusted, (00:02:51.190): rejecting new possibilities before they can hurt us, (00:02:54.693): building an identity around what was lost. (00:02:57.735): Remembering what happened is not the same as playing with the cut. (00:03:01.298): Grieving is not failure. (00:03:03.299): Healing does not require you to deny the wound. (00:03:06.101): Playing with the cut is when we repeatedly return to the pain in ways that keep it open. (00:03:11.612): Before I began to write this episode, (00:03:13.853): I was planning to go in a completely different direction, (00:03:16.934): but I felt led to this path today. (00:03:19.154): There is a song written by Wayne Watson, (00:03:21.395): but the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir made it a major hit in the 80s, (00:03:25.176): Friend of a Wounded Heart. (00:03:26.896): The song came to mind and I had to play it. (00:03:29.557): I will add a link to the show notes so you can take a listen. (00:03:32.778): But it starts, smile, make them think you're happy, laugh and say that things are fine. (00:03:38.603): We do that, don't we? (00:03:40.045): We have been raised to hide our emotions, to suck it up, shake it off, move on. (00:03:45.049): And just as in episode seven, (00:03:47.091): I spoke about celebrating and taking the time to make memorials to the good things. (00:03:51.955): We must be willing to stop and acknowledge the things that have shaken our world. (00:03:56.057): Broken our heart made us get shaky and doubtful about our future. (00:04:00.638): When pain remains unacknowledged, it can begin to shape the way we think, respond, and live. (00:04:06.519): Prolonged emotional distress can affect our sleep, appetite, energy, and physical well-being. (00:04:12.661): It can also cause us to lose hope, abandon dreams, and withdraw from life. (00:04:17.982): Scripture describes this as wounded or broken spirit. (00:04:21.583): Proverbs 18, 4 acts, A wounded spirit? (00:04:25.104): Who can bear? (00:04:26.446): The Bible does not pretend that emotional pain stays neatly contained in one part of us. (00:04:31.573): It can affect how we experience everything. (00:04:34.377): A broken heart doesn't have to become a broken life. (00:04:37.642): Jesus invites us to acknowledge the wound, (00:04:40.165): bring it to him, and receive the help we need to begin living again. (00:04:44.360): Even when it's not physical death, (00:04:46.161): it can be the death of a dream or goal, an unwillingness to try again. (00:04:50.983): We give up. (00:04:51.943): We decide this thing is not for me. (00:04:53.904): It is not meant for me to have good things. (00:04:56.345): I want you to know that your friend Jesus wants to heal your wounded and broken heart. (00:05:01.527): The writer of Psalm 83, (00:05:03.308): 3 to 4 and verse 6 said, (00:05:05.769): For my soul is full of troubles and my life draught nigh unto the grave. (00:05:11.100): I am counted with them that go down into the pit. (00:05:13.961): Thou hast laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deeps. (00:05:18.422): David said in Psalms 32, 3, (00:05:20.423): and 4, When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. (00:05:27.155): For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me. (00:05:30.636): My moisture is turned into the drought of summer. (00:05:33.698): He is telling us that his inability to express the anguish (00:05:37.239): and guilt feel like he is physically wasting away. (00:05:41.861): Sometimes when I read the Psalms, I think that David was very dramatic. (00:05:45.563): Today we would say he was very in touch with his feelings. (00:05:48.644): He celebrated God when things were good and when they weren't. (00:05:52.305): He cried out to God when he screwed up and when he felt lost and alone. (00:05:56.899): You may not have someone you feel you can share the pain that is causing you (00:06:00.522): to feel hopeless today, (00:06:01.963): but I want you to know that God is with you and he hears you. (00:06:05.106): I want you to be honest with him. (00:06:06.887): He sent Jesus to not only be our savior, but to have a real understanding of how humans feel. (00:06:12.592): Then he let Jesus live out a life that we can model. (00:06:17.356): Isaiah 61, 1-3, (00:06:18.797): speaking the words that Jesus would later repeat in the synagogue, (00:06:21.660): says, The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me. (00:06:25.088): He says, (00:06:49.317): Matthew 11, 28 says, John 14, 1 says, (00:07:13.295): Believe also in me. (00:07:14.815): Hey, fearless one. (00:07:15.676): This is Nerissa Golden. (00:07:17.036): I know you already have a copy of my book, (00:07:19.177): Live Fairless, (00:07:20.277): a Christian entrepreneur's guide to life and business on your bookshelf or (00:07:23.398): on your Kindle. (00:07:24.118): Thank you so much for buying it, but you haven't cracked it open yet. (00:07:27.639): I want to encourage you to do that. (00:07:29.619): Read it a little at a time and work through the reflection questions at the end of each chapter. (00:07:34.301): If you don't have a copy, be sure to get yours in the format you prefer at amazon.com. (00:07:39.769): Your God loves you. (00:07:41.351): I want you to take a deep breath and say out loud, I am loved. (00:07:46.335): I want you to imagine God standing in front of you and he's beckoning you. (00:07:50.419): Don't hesitate. (00:07:51.640): Run. (00:07:53.001): Just allow him to embrace you and feel him taking away all the pain. (00:07:57.766): He's not rushing you, so you don't need to let go of him just yet. (00:08:01.650): Rest. (00:08:02.430): He wants to give you rest. (00:08:04.778): When you're ready, unburden your soul to him. (00:08:07.839): Show him the broken pieces and ask him, what can he do with that? (00:08:12.721): Trust me, he will take them. (00:08:15.342): Remember that song? (00:08:16.582): Give them all, give them all to Jesus. (00:08:19.103): Shattered dreams, wounded hearts and broken toys. (00:08:21.584): I don't know why I've been feeling so nostalgic today. (00:08:24.566): Give them all, give them all, give them all to Jesus and he will turn your sorrow into joy. (00:08:29.069): That was Dallas Holmes. (00:08:30.510): I know I use God and Jesus interchangeably because they're all one and the same and yet unique. (00:08:36.015): So if it's not daddy God you want to unburden yourself to, (00:08:39.277): then let your big brother Jesus, your lawyer and best friend take the load off. (00:08:44.161): Neither one of them will turn you away. (00:08:46.763): In this moment, (00:08:47.823): those of you listening who are physically sick are on my heart (00:08:51.386): and I see God beckoning you not to despair. (00:08:54.357): Not to be brokenhearted or feel shame at what you feel you've left undone or never achieved. (00:09:00.541): I see him asking for those broken pieces. (00:09:03.463): He wants to heal you where you are. (00:09:05.244): The song says, Jesus, he meets you where you are. (00:09:09.386): Jesus, he heals your secret scars. (00:09:12.528): May I just pray with you today? (00:09:14.429): Jesus, I have nothing to give you but broken hopes and dreams. (00:09:18.512): A heart that is shattered beyond repair and And a life that has been less (00:09:22.464): than I expected it to be. (00:09:24.266): I haven't lived up to my own expectations and I don't feel in this moment (00:09:28.850): that I'm even worthy to ask you to do this. (00:09:31.714): But I ask you now to take this shattered heart, take my shattered dreams and turn them into joy. (00:09:38.901): My body is a reflection of the pain I've been carrying for so long. (00:09:42.925): I don't want to be in pain anymore. (00:09:44.826): I want to live. (00:09:46.007): I want to get back in the playground of life and be brave enough to follow (00:09:49.628): the dreams that have lived in my heart for decades. (00:09:52.450): I give it all to you. (00:09:54.070): Thank you for being my Lord. (00:09:55.631): Thank you for being my friend. (00:09:57.272): Thank you for being my big brother. (00:09:59.313): Thank you Jesus for sacrificing all for me so I could live. (00:10:03.615): Today I receive your love, your help and the courage to begin healing. (00:10:08.889): Wow, I'm excited for you. (00:10:10.131): Psalms 147 verse 3 says, (00:10:28.975): Sometimes Jesus begins healing us through prayer and scripture. (00:10:32.917): Sometimes he also uses a doctor, therapist, counselor, pastor, trusted friend or support group. (00:10:39.782): Receiving help is not evidence that your faith has failed. (00:10:43.303): It may be part of God's provision for your healing. (00:10:46.086): If you're a parent or you have younger siblings, (00:10:48.628): you might remember when one of them would fall off a playground apparatus (00:10:52.652): and you would help them get back up and you set them back (00:10:55.715): to doing what they were doing. (00:10:57.436): Sometimes we might have wished they would sit quietly, but no. (00:11:00.659): They want to go back to jumping off the jungle gym or going backwards down the slide. (00:11:05.525): Once Jesus has taken the pain that you've handed over, (00:11:08.588): he isn't going to say, sit here indefinitely. (00:11:11.751): He will nudge you to go back out to play. (00:11:14.073): Whether that's about dating again or starting a new business or pursuing (00:11:18.057): that dream you put down, he's calling you to model him. (00:11:21.460): Just as in Isaiah 61, he told us what he came to do. (00:11:25.363): He's expecting you to do the same. (00:11:27.962): Now you have named it. (00:11:29.443): You've told the truth about what hurt and what you lost. (00:11:33.065): You've brought it honestly to Jesus and I hope you can share it with someone safe. (00:11:37.147): And if there is no one, write it in your journal or on your phone in a note. (00:11:41.890): Next, you've got to move. (00:11:44.232): Take one small action that reconnects you with life. (00:11:47.874): Your movement may be sending a voice note, accepting an invitation, holding someone's hand. (00:11:53.697): Humming a song, (00:11:54.878): doodling, (00:11:55.838): booking a counseling appointment, (00:11:57.679): or returning to something you once loved, (00:12:00.661): this is how you get back on the playground. (00:12:03.762): Heartbreak does not only make us question what happened, it can make us question who we are. (00:12:09.245): We begin to call ourselves unwanted, foolish, abandoned, or forgotten. (00:12:14.828): But what happened to you does not have the authority to rename you. (00:12:18.392): Your identity was established by God before your heart was ever broken. (00:12:22.775): I want to know if this episode was for you.
