(00:00:00.051): Hello, fearless one. (00:00:01.293): There's a question I want you to sit with today. (00:00:04.036): What is really driving your life and your business? (00:00:07.380): In other words, what is the fuel underneath your decisions? (00:00:10.965): Is it love or is it fear? (00:00:13.419): The Bible tells us in 1 John 4, verse 18 that perfect love casts out fear. (00:00:19.082): If perfect love casts out fear, (00:00:21.122): then fear and love cannot occupy the same place of authority in our lives. (00:00:26.205): One will always shape how we see ourselves, other people, and the future. (00:00:30.867): But fear is not simply an emotion. (00:00:33.448): What if fear is also the frame through which we interpret life? (00:00:36.929): Let's dive into that today. (00:00:38.522): Hi, I'm Nerissa Golden, host of the Fairless One podcast. (00:00:41.424): I'm an author, strategist, mom, entrepreneur, and lover of Jesus Christ. (00:00:46.346): I get a kick out of helping my friends and clients unlock the value in their gifts and business. (00:00:51.649): And for the next few minutes, I want to encourage you to do the same. (00:00:55.071): Let's go. (00:00:55.778): Before we go any further, (00:00:57.420): why not share the link to this episode with a friend or on your social media? (00:01:01.484): It goes a long way to helping me increase my audience. (00:01:04.188): Thank you for doing that. (00:01:05.769): Back when I was writing my second book, (00:01:07.671): The Making of a Caribbeanpreneur, (00:01:09.393): Challenges to Overcoming Fear and Building Wealth, (00:01:12.295): I discovered that we are all born with only two natural fears, (00:01:15.878): the fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. (00:01:19.340): Every other fear is learned. (00:01:21.401): Many of those learned fears we acquired probably before the age of eight and (00:01:25.724): the rest by the time we enter our early adult years. (00:01:29.527): But what I want you to know is that if you learn the fear, it can also be unlearned. (00:01:34.907): Many of us spend years believing we are afraid of failure, (00:01:38.088): rejection, success, visibility, money, or uncertainty. (00:01:42.390): But perhaps those are not the real fears. (00:01:44.832): Perhaps they are simply the result of a story we have believed for so long (00:01:48.753): that it feels like the truth. (00:01:51.334): The question is this. (00:01:53.028): Which story is shaping your decisions? (00:01:55.549): The story that says you are loved, chosen, and provided for by God? (00:01:59.710): Or the story that says you're alone, (00:02:01.670): disconnected, not enough, and that there will never be enough? (00:02:05.211): Those two stories produce two completely different lives. (00:02:09.152): They produce two completely different businesses. (00:02:12.453): One builds from abundance, the other builds from scarcity. (00:02:16.314): One builds from identity, the other builds from insecurity. (00:02:20.595): One trusts the other controls. (00:02:23.377): One creates the other merely survives. (00:02:26.280): I have noticed that many entrepreneurs probably tell the story of growing up with very little. (00:02:30.763): They say things like, I never want to be broke again. (00:02:33.886): It sounds admirable. (00:02:35.187): It sounds motivated. (00:02:36.668): And in many ways it is, but it is worth asking another question. (00:02:41.371): Is your business being built because you love what God has called you to create (00:02:46.135): Or because you're trying to outrun a past you are still afraid of. (00:02:50.138): There is a profound difference. (00:02:51.979): Imagine two sisters brought up in the same home with the same experiences of poverty. (00:02:57.082): Both grew up to be incredibly wealthy. (00:02:59.695): Yet one sister has a persistent fear of being poor again, (00:03:03.496): while the other no longer sees herself as poor and that poverty will never be (00:03:07.777): in her future. (00:03:08.998): The external circumstances may have changed for the sisters. (00:03:12.679): However, they have different perspectives on their lives. (00:03:15.900): One is still looking backwards. (00:03:17.460): The other has accepted a new identity. (00:03:20.468): That is the difference between living from fear and living from love. (00:03:24.094): The Apostle Paul understood this when he wrote, (00:03:27.078): forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things (00:03:30.684): which are ahead, I press toward the goal. (00:03:34.181): Paul wasn't pretending the past never happened. (00:03:37.322): He simply refused to let the past become the architect of his future. (00:03:41.563): Psychologist Dr. Benjamin Hardy makes a similar point in his work, Be Your Future Self Now. (00:03:47.745): He argues that extraordinary people allow their vision of the future to shape (00:03:51.567): the present instead of allowing the past to dictate what they believe is possible. (00:03:57.128): The Bible has been teaching this all along. (00:04:00.043): Faith has always been future focused. (00:04:02.544): Fear is usually past focus. (00:04:04.986): Fear asks, what if it happens again? (00:04:07.567): Faith asks, what has God promised? (00:04:10.649): Fear remembers failure. (00:04:12.590): Faith remembers God's faithfulness. (00:04:15.651): I recently discovered author and teacher Jamie Winship, (00:04:19.033): who coincidentally wrote a book called Living Fearless a few years before I did. (00:04:24.396): He offers another perspective that I found incredibly helpful. (00:04:28.943): He encourages people to ask God a simple question when revisiting painful memories. (00:04:35.228): Jesus, where were you? (00:04:37.410): Not to change what happened, but to discover what was true that we couldn't see at the time. (00:04:44.035): Many of us have interpreted difficult moments as proof that we were abandoned, (00:04:48.678): rejected, or incapable. (00:04:51.280): What would the Lord say if we were to ask him where he was in the midst of (00:04:55.584): the poverty and the pain? (00:04:57.603): God is love and his response would reveal that love even in (00:05:01.365): the moment we could not see it or feel it. (00:05:03.967): He is not the accuser of the brethren. (00:05:06.448): He doesn't chastise us. (00:05:08.369): He is always looking at us and seeing his beloved. (00:05:12.252): The event doesn't change, but the way in which we can interpret what happened can change. (00:05:17.515): And when the meaning changes, our future changes. (00:05:21.752): I recently tried this exercise with an old belief system that I had battled with (00:05:25.998): since I was a child. (00:05:27.500): It was connected to a memory about visiting the homes of some (00:05:30.544): of my wealthy classmates in high school. (00:05:33.088): I really enjoyed hanging out with them and it wasn't because they had a big house. (00:05:37.553): They were just these two friendly girls who were kind and we could be really silly together. (00:05:42.674): It didn't matter that they were Indian and I was black, we were just little island girls. (00:05:47.375): However, (00:05:48.055): I remember one of my parents asking me if I thought I was better than they were (00:05:52.436): because I liked going to my friends' houses. (00:05:55.277): I don't think I visited their house too often after that and I confess it framed (00:05:59.977): a lot of how I showed up in the years following. (00:06:03.298): I found that I was always dumbing down myself, (00:06:06.059): my appearance, (00:06:06.899): my language to not be seen as too much or trying to be better than other people. (00:06:12.401): It also meant I kept back my own growth professionally and financially. (00:06:16.922): It was always easier to defer to others rather than put myself forward or first. (00:06:22.483): This is an issue I have brought before the Lord many times and I have released it (00:06:26.524): and my parents because they didn't know what they didn't know. (00:06:29.498): That was their own framing and perception. (00:06:31.979): But I asked the Lord a few days ago, what did you want me to know in that situation? (00:06:37.300): His response was simple. (00:06:39.260): I wanted you to see there was more to be had and it was available for you too. (00:06:45.161): There is a lot of work being done today on helping people to shift their mindset. (00:06:50.443): But this goes beyond mindset to your belief system. (00:06:54.343): It's about the lens through which you see the world. (00:06:57.662): If your worldview says that wealth and good things are for those people over there (00:07:01.823): and not people like you, (00:07:03.244): then that is how your operating software, (00:07:05.645): your mind, will process and deliver the world to you. (00:07:10.046): If you can see your world through the lens of what your creator designed for you, (00:07:14.128): which is blessed, (00:07:15.528): fruitful, (00:07:16.368): multiplying and dominating, (00:07:18.469): then you are going to have a different experience of the world. (00:07:22.128): Think about how this would affect your business. (00:07:25.591): If fear is driving you, every client feels like your last chance. (00:07:30.035): Every setback feels catastrophic. (00:07:32.256): Every competitor feels like a threat. (00:07:35.079): You struggle to charge appropriately because you fear people saying no. (00:07:39.262): You hold on to every task because you fear nobody else will do it properly. (00:07:44.186): You hesitate to launch because you fear criticism. (00:07:47.933): You say yes to work that doesn't fit because you fear there won't be another opportunity. (00:07:53.579): Fear becomes an exhausting business partner. (00:07:56.683): But when love and abundance become your foundation, your decisions begin to change. (00:08:02.006): You know your value isn't determined by one client. (00:08:05.208): You know provision doesn't come from one contract. (00:08:08.211): You know your identity doesn't rise and fall with your bank balance. (00:08:12.053): You can say no. (00:08:13.434): You can delegate. (00:08:14.695): You can think long term. (00:08:16.176): You can build something that lasts. (00:08:19.498): The same principle applies to our health. (00:08:22.121): Many people grow up where food was scarce or where treats became the reward (00:08:26.184): after difficult times. (00:08:28.085): Years later, they still eat as though scarcity is around the corner. (00:08:32.589): Not because they're hungry, but because fear and memories of hunger are making the decision. (00:08:38.913): Love asks a different question. (00:08:41.695): How do I care well for the body God has entrusted to me? (00:08:46.358): What do I eat so that I can have a body that can carry me through all the seasons of life? (00:08:52.207): God promises with long life he will satisfy us. (00:08:55.729): We want to be living long and healthy, not long and in pain and miserable. (00:09:01.233): We can look at money the same way. (00:09:04.195): Fear hoards and fear also overspends. (00:09:07.597): Isn't it interesting that opposite behaviors can come from the same root? (00:09:12.200): One person clings tightly because they fear there won't be enough. (00:09:16.263): Another spends everything because they fear missing out. (00:09:19.765): Both are operating from scarcity. (00:09:22.966): But thank God, (00:09:24.227): love stewards, (00:09:25.427): love plans, (00:09:26.968): love gifts generously, love trust God's provision without becoming careless. (00:09:32.810): This is why our identity matters so much. (00:09:36.131): If I believe I am alone, then everything depends on me. (00:09:39.893): If I believe I am loved by God, (00:09:41.753): then I can work hard without carrying the weight of believing the whole world rests (00:09:46.135): on my shoulders. (00:09:47.476): That doesn't remove responsibility, it transforms it. (00:09:51.650): I believe this is one of the greatest invitations of walking with God. (00:09:55.533): Not simply to become more confident but to exchange the frame through which we see everything. (00:10:01.676): To stop interpreting life through fear and begin interpreting life through the love of God. (00:10:07.080): Because love changes how you see failure. (00:10:10.242): Love changes how you see opportunity. (00:10:13.064): Love changes how you see yourself. (00:10:15.585): And ultimately love changes what you build. (00:10:19.419): So today I leave you with this question. (00:10:22.301): When you look honestly at your business, (00:10:24.343): your finances, (00:10:25.323): your health, (00:10:25.884): and your relationships, are you building from fear or are you building from love? (00:10:31.688): Remember the fearless framework. (00:10:33.769): You are blessed before you achieve anything because your identity comes from God. (00:10:39.594): As you embrace that identity, (00:10:41.535): you become fruitful, developing the gifts he has placed within you. (00:10:46.153): You multiply by creating value that serves others. (00:10:49.995): And you exercise dominion by stewarding everything he has entrusted to you (00:10:53.837): with wisdom and courage. (00:10:55.918): You don't have to spend your life trying to escape your past. (00:10:59.200): You can build your future by agreeing with what God has already declared about you. (00:11:03.883): Live fearless. (00:11:04.848): Thank you for listening to Fairless One with Nerissa Golden.
