#showupshowoff – Start a Wine Blog

I wanted to keep my word to drop the next in the #showupshowoff series by any means necessary. I will do a live on this at some point so stay tuned. The info in this is useful even if you are not into wines but always wanted to do a blog on your particular niche. Read on.

Start where you are! Doing a wine blog/vlog doesn’t mean that you are an expert in wines. In fact, you can be a total novice with an interest in wines and in sharing a bit of yourself with the world. We can learn as you learn.

Use What You Have! The reason I am even doing this blog is because I’ve shared the idea with several people over the past year and none have taken action. Often the excuses are, I’m waiting for a microphone or a new camera or I need to get editing equipment. We will always find a reason to delay but the only people that can gain traction and attention are those who take action. So start where you are and with what you have available.

  • For this post I searched for types of wines. There are quite a few. You can create a ton of content around types of wines, the kinds of wines that are made by different regions of the world, local fruits that you can make wines from, etc.
  • Now there is more to wine than wine. Surprise surprise. You need a wine glass. I had no idea there were so many different kinds and they all have a specific purpose. Now that gives you even more content to create. You can make a slide show with images of the various glasses and tell us what each is for. If you happen to have your own collection then give us a tour of your wine glass cabinet and talk us through how you use each and with what wine.
  • I never drink on an empty stomach. Different wines are best appreciated with certain foods. Take us on a wine and food journey of what wines work with what. I went to a wine launch once and they offered various cheeses to sample with the wines as they brought out different flavors. Again, more content to create and share.
  • What’s with all the sniffing? Why do people sniff a wine before sampling it? Tell us. What should we be looking for when we sniff?
  • Do you enjoy TV shows or movies? Remember Olivia Pope on Scandal? She always had a drink or two in each episode. Create some content around your favorite TV shows or movies which include wine scenes, shot in wine bars, wine bloopers (they used the wrong glass with what wine? Yes you can be petty).

Google is Your Best Friend and Content is Still King! Now I am writing this post as the novice I am with wines. Even if you are an expert in wines assume the people watching aren’t, so take them through the process as a beginner.

Switch it Up! Bring in a guest or take us out of your living room or kitchen.
  • Invite someone who loves wine to join you and open a bottle on camera or during a recorded interview. The two of you discuss the wine and hot topics or life. If they happen to be someone fascinating, then let’s hear more of their journey.
  • Take us to the wine section in your local supermarket and talk us through the varieties and price points. What is a good pinot grigio you can purchase for under xyz dollars? If you have a wine vault in your community, take us there and talk to some people about what they are buying and why they chose it.
Name Your Blog. Now I’ve waited until this point to talk about naming because this can be another sticking point for some people. Some blogs evolve and you don’t want to tie yourself to a name too early and then you realize it doesn’t fit where you want to go. I also don’t want you to get trapped in overthinking a name and that stops you from starting the blog. Up to this point, you can be blogging on your personal social media accounts on your YouTube channel, etc. Save the content and transfer it to your branded pages once you are ready.
  • How do you pick a name? Let’s say you love soca music and it is usually playing in the background or you find you refer to lyrics often in your posts, an idea could be Dis Girl Can Wine. It is a play on drinking wine of course but also the dance style that naturally accompanies soca music (we hope). If you love reading, something a long the lines of Wine and the Word. I have not checked if these are taken already. They are just to give you an idea of where you can go with naming your blog. The Wine Blog. Obvious but clear! Another one could be Wednesday Wines. Maybe you always post a new piece of content or a live on Wednesdays. Go for it.
  • Search for the relevant blog handles for a web domain, social media, etc. Use a search engine like namechk.com to see if the name is available on all platforms. Try to get them on as many as possible and especially on the ones where you have the most engagement. (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn)

Switch it Up Even More! After a six months or more of doing your blogs solo or with a guest or two you may want to add more dimension to the content. At the same time you may now be ready for trying to get someone else to pay for your wine. An idea could be to host dinner parties. Invite a few friends to chip in and agree to be on your blog and discuss wines and the topic of the day. This may require a bit more planning but still you don’t need expensive new equipment to do it. Be strategic about where you place the camera, ensure everyone is speaking loudly enough and have some fun.

Show Me the Money!
  • You can organize wine making classes which people pay for. Unless you are an expert I don’t expect you to teach the class. Make the arrangements and bring people together to learn as you learn and record the experience. Content for days.
  • Sell merchandise with quirky wine sayings or branded wine products which you love and know others would want to have.

We are all in the tourism business. Maybe in earlier content you took us on a trip with you to see a vineyard in Italy, Peru or the Dominican Republic. How about organizing a wine tour and invite your audience to come with you? It is another way to leverage your growing audience. Please don’t do this if you have not built up a reputation as someone who can be trusted to be consistent and always bringing value. People will want to work with you only if you can prove over and over that you deliver.

Share Your Content Again and Again. Even if you prefer to write as I do, you need to reach people where they are. Some people prefer watching videos or listening to podcasts. They prefer animations. Use the skills that you have and those you have access to, to create content that fits the needs of your audience.
  • Content for Facebook can be repurposed for Instagram. IG TV can handle longer videos and makes for a better viewing experiencing than using IG stories. Facebook Watch videos are also an option, as well as YouTube.
  • You can also take the audio tracks from your videos as long as they are clear and make podcasts. You can rewrite a blog post and then record it for use as a podcast.
More than anything, I want you to know that what ever your area of interest is, even if it is not wines, you should start now. Stop putting off your plans. The world is waiting for you.
