The old adage practice makes perfect always felt daunting to me.
Perfection as a goal felt out of reach — impossible, even. That was for certain people. Certainly not for the likes of me.
But discipline is never about perfection.
Each of us is already disciplined in ways we barely notice.
You make your bed.
You brush your teeth.
You show up for work on time.
You don’t debate these things — you just do them.
That’s discipline.
The challenge isn’t that discipline is unavailable to us.
It’s that we struggle to translate it into new areas.
Eating enough vegetables feels harder than making the bed.
Taking 10,000 steps feels heavier than brushing your teeth.
Not because you can’t, but because it hasn’t yet become practice.
Discipline isn’t about willpower.
It’s about willingness.
The willingness to get up and do it again.
To practice today, even if yesterday wasn’t great.
To practice until it becomes second nature.
You don’t wait to feel disciplined.
You practice until you are.
Show up as if your life depends on it.
Because it does.
“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:13 -14 (KJV)
