Which Comes First – Your Content or Your Audience?

Did we know we would need a piece of plastic in our hand that would be a phone, music studio, a film camera, a business center and a university?

No we didn’t. So to put the pressure on others to decide what you will produce is unfair.

Henry Ford of the Ford Motor Company was credited as saying that if he had asked the people what they wanted, they would have said a faster horse. At some point in our past, we did not know we needed cars or planes and many of the things we now take for granted in our daily life. Imagine no internet.

Not a good image at all. I don’t want to go back to a time without the internet.

Now imagine the world without you and the work you do in it? What is the space that is left unfulfilled? For me that would look like a space that is missing lots of great stories and inspiration. Stories that I have yet to write and support I have yet to give to aspiring writers who don’t believe anyone wants to hear what they have to say.

We don’t yet know that we have been waiting on you. In our world, we are moving along our merry way wishing we could afford a Nokia or Motorola flip phone. We have no idea that you are about to show up like a Blackberry smartphone or an iPhone and blow our minds and change our trajectory.

Your job is to believe so earnestly in the gifts and value within yourself and surrender to the pressing need to share it, that we have no choice but to be swept up in the wave of the possibilities you are about to illuminate to us.

The only way to know if there is an audience for your work is to create it and release it over and over and over again.
