2020 – Don’t Start Over

2020 – Don’t Start Over

Happy New Year to you and those you hold dear.

My first blog post is always around the third because on Montserrat, we close out our carnival on January 1 and I need a minute to recover. Yes, you would have found me on the street but no jamming, just taking photos and videos for my website Discover Montserrat.

But I didn’t want another day to go by and you not hear from me. I’ve been pondering what to say and also how I plan to approach this year. As Bishop TD Jakes said in his New Year’s Eve message, we remember life in decades. Think the Roaring 20s, 70s Music, etc. So rather than focusing on the next 365 days, I am looking at my vision until 2029.

What will define your new decade? I had a shock when I did the math and figured out how old I will be in 2030. Umm I will keep that to myself for now. Let’s just say I felt an urge to get cracking. However, older is hopefully wiser and so I stopped to take an assessment of the last year and the past decade.

In the past my usual start of the year thing is to launch something new. I’ve always got new ideas so why not give them a try? That is a recipe for disaster, not success. A better approach is to honestly review your past year and analyze what worked, what can be improved and what was a waste of your most precious resource…your time. Once you have your answer, commit to buckling down and doing more of what was working. It may need a few tweaks but stick with it.

The reason you haven’t seen the rewards you’ve been waiting for is because you are not sticking with your plan long enough. You’ve got to put in the time and allow people to see that you are in it for the long haul. We’re so used to seeing people change and launch that we no longer believe they are worth our investment. Let your clients and potential customers see that you are one with stick-to-it-iveness.

If you must make change, then use the lessons of the past to inform how you move forward. Don’t allow all that pain and frustration to go to waste. Take the new knowledge to build a better business, a better you.

My 2019 and the last decade was one of much change, challenges and growth. I wish the next ten for you are all you desire and more. I also want you and your business to still be standing when next we have a conversation about a new year. Wishing you every success and all of God’s goodness and peace.
