To Niche or Not to Be Niche…
On any given day you are going to get a myriad of tips and must dos on entrepreneurship. It can get really confusing. One day the “expert” says you need to carve out your niche and by 5PM the other “expert” says you should be diversifying your business. Who’s right?
You know what is best for you.
You have to know what is also best for you at the time.
There are seasons when to focus on the social media side of my business was essential as that was what clients needed. But seasons change and you must be able to see which way the tide is moving and get ahead of it.
At no time is it ever good to diversify your business to the extent that you want to be the end all and be all for your customers. You need to have mastery of something. You must be known as the “expert” in an area that is truly your sweet spot.
Often when you are doing great work a client will present another problem that they have and you suddenly believe you have to be the one with the answer. It is quite okay to say this isn’t my area of expertise. But wait…does that mean you leave the money on the table? The client still has the problem and you are a solutionist.
If you are caught between staying niche and diversifying, try this. Rather than try to expand on your own, partner with another expert who can add value to your business and in so doing can increase your revenue potential. In this way you can do what you love but also be the avenue for finding more solutions for your clients.
